“Ping, power, pipe” is shorthand for the basic elements a multi-tenant data center (MTDC) or colocation provider supplies: remote access to hosted computers, electrical power, and internet connectivity. It is a useful description of the service, not a technical guarantee: the phrase alone sets no latency, bandwidth, uptime, redundancy, or service-level target.
What each part of “ping, power, pipe” means
- Ping: Remote access to computers hosted in the facility. In this phrase, “ping” does not specify a measured response time or latency threshold.
- Power: The facility’s electrical supply for the customer’s equipment.
- Pipe: Internet or network connectivity to and from the facility.
The expression has long been used to describe multi-tenant data centers, where customers place or lease equipment space in a shared facility. Belden’s explanation and Planisware’s 2024 Universal Registration Document use it in this colocation context.
What the phrase does—and does not—tell you
“Ping, power, pipe” describes broad service categories rather than a complete data-center specification. It does not, by itself, promise a particular network speed, latency, power density, uptime, backup arrangement, or service-level agreement (SLA). Those details depend on the provider’s facilities and the terms of the customer’s contract.

It also does not mean that the colocation provider owns or maintains the customer’s hardware. For example, Planisware’s filing describes leased data-center locations where the company retained ownership and maintenance responsibility for its servers.

How to evaluate the actual service
Use the phrase as a starting point, then ask for the measurable commitments and operational details behind each part:
- Connectivity: Which network and internet connections are available? Are there backup suppliers or other connectivity paths, and what happens if a connection fails?
- Power: What capacity is available to your equipment? What backup and recovery arrangements apply during an outage?
- Support and SLAs: What support is provided, and which availability or response commitments are written into the agreement?
- Third-party dependencies: Which suppliers provide essential services, and how are their risks managed? The Cloud Security Alliance’s SaaS governance guidance includes provider support, SLAs, supplier lists, and underlying “ping, power, pipe” suppliers among assessment considerations.
- Other facility considerations: Depending on your needs, compare flexibility, sustainability, customer service, and services beyond space, power, and connectivity. Belden raised these as additional evaluation factors in a 2016 article; they are considerations, not a current market ranking.
A company-specific example of resilience
Planisware’s 2024 registration document, published in 2025, says the company had backup internet suppliers at its multi-tenant data centers and a Data Recovery Plan for power outages. It also reports that 100% of the data-center sites hosting the group’s servers were classified as resilient in 2024. That figure describes Planisware’s own sites and reporting; it is not an industry-wide benchmark or a guarantee for another provider.
