If Minecraft Launcher will not open on your Windows PC or laptop, start by checking for Launcher updates and confirming that you’re signed into the Microsoft account that owns your Minecraft license. If that doesn’t help, try Windows’ app repair options and then reinstall the Launcher. The right next step depends on what happens when you open it: no response, a window that closes, an error, or a Microsoft Store problem.
First, identify what is failing
This guide covers the Minecraft Launcher failing to start on Windows. Note what you see when you open it, because an error message or a sign-in loop may point to a different problem than no response. If the Launcher opens but Minecraft itself fails to start, or an installation stalls, that is a different issue.
- No response: The Launcher does not visibly open.
- Window opens and closes: It starts briefly, then exits.
- Error or sign-in loop: Record the exact message and whether it appears before or after sign-in.
- Store trouble: Microsoft Store will not open or cannot install the Launcher.
Check for Minecraft Launcher updates
Minecraft recommends checking for updates when the Launcher will not open. If you can reach the Launcher’s account settings, look for Settings > About to see whether an update is available. The Launcher is available for Windows from Minecraft’s Windows download page and the Microsoft Store. If the Launcher cannot open far enough to check, continue with the account and Windows steps below.

Use the Microsoft account associated with your Minecraft license in the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. A mismatch can complicate installation or access, but it is not proof that an account issue caused every failure to open. Minecraft’s Launcher troubleshooting guidance also identifies missing dependencies as a possible troubleshooting consideration.

Repair the Launcher in Windows
Windows offers Repair and Reset controls for some apps. Try Repair first if the option is available; it is a reasonable next step for a broken Store app, not a guaranteed fix. The menu names differ by Windows version:
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Minecraft Launcher, select its menu, then choose Advanced options.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select Minecraft Launcher, then choose Advanced options.
Choose Repair if it appears, and test the Launcher. If Repair is unavailable or does not resolve the issue, you can try Reset from the same page if offered. Microsoft notes that these options are not available for every app. See Microsoft’s instructions for repairing apps in Windows.

Reinstall the Launcher using an official route
If updating, account checks, and available Windows repair options do not help, uninstall and reinstall the Launcher. Minecraft lists Microsoft Store and Minecraft.net as Windows installation routes. Its support guidance also documents the Xbox app as an alternative when Store installation fails. These are options for different installation circumstances, not a claim that one route is always better.
- Uninstall Minecraft Launcher using Windows’ app settings or the Microsoft Store app-management controls.
- Reinstall it through Microsoft Store or use the Minecraft.net Windows download page.
- If Microsoft Store installation fails, try the Xbox app route described in Minecraft’s Launcher troubleshooting guidance.
- Sign in using the Microsoft account that owns the license. Minecraft says the Minecraft.net Windows installer still requires a Microsoft Store login to install properly.
If Microsoft Store itself will not open
These steps target Microsoft Store, not Minecraft Launcher directly. Microsoft recommends resetting the Store cache, checking Windows updates, and verifying time and location settings if the Store will not launch.

- Verify that your PC’s time and location settings are correct.
For the Store-specific instructions, see Microsoft’s Microsoft Store troubleshooting page.
When to contact Minecraft Support
If the Launcher still will not start after the relevant steps, contact Minecraft Support and include the exact error message, if one appears. Also note your Windows version, whether the Launcher came from Microsoft Store or Minecraft.net, what happens on launch, and which Microsoft account is signed into the Launcher, Store, and Xbox app. These details help distinguish a startup failure from an installation, sign-in, or game-launch problem.

Windows 10 support context
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That lifecycle change does not establish that an unsupported or out-of-date Windows 10 PC caused a particular Launcher failure; check the PC’s update status rather than assuming the cause. Microsoft’s Windows app repair guidance includes the Windows 10 path above.
