On the PS5 Safe Mode screen, choose Restart PS5. This exits Safe Mode and restarts the console normally, according to PlayStation Support.
Exit Safe Mode with Restart PS5
- On the Safe Mode screen, select Restart PS5.
- Let the console restart. If it starts normally, you are done.
If you cannot navigate the menu, connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable, then press the PS button. Sony’s Safe Mode guidance describes the menu as a way to start the console with only its most basic functions active.
If the PS5 keeps returning to Safe Mode
Power-cycle the console
- Press and hold the PS5 power button until the console beeps and turns off.
- Disconnect the power cable and leave the console unplugged for 20 minutes.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn on the PS5.
These are Sony’s steps for a console that remains stuck in Safe Mode. See PlayStation’s Safe Mode troubleshooting instructions.

If Safe Mode appeared after an update problem
A failed update or a long period without an internet connection may mean the console needs a system software update. Follow Sony’s PS5 system software update instructions. If using the manual USB method, the drive must be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and the update file must be saved in the specified PS5/UPDATE folder. Follow Sony’s current file-naming and installation directions exactly; this is a separate recovery procedure from selecting Restart PS5.
Know the data-loss risk before choosing reset options
Sony warns that some Safe Mode options can cause data loss. Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) delete user data. They are not routine ways to exit Safe Mode. Restore Default Settings resets settings but does not delete games, apps, captures, clips, or saved data, according to Sony’s Safe Mode option descriptions.
