There is no comparable global figure in the available evidence for how much gamers spent on loot boxes in 2026. The strongest recent figures here describe UK young people’s awareness, reported use and payment methods—not total spending. A frequently cited market estimate is historical: more than $15 billion in 2020, attributed to Juniper Research (2021) and cited by researchers in 2024.
How much do gamers spend on loot boxes?
The available figures measure different things, populations and years, so they cannot be combined into a global 2026 spending total. In particular, awareness and reported participation do not reveal how much people paid.
| Measure | What was reported | Scope and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness and use | 63% were aware they could pay to open loot boxes, packs or chests; 27% said they had done so. | UK Gambling Commission, 2024; young people aged 11–17, with 3,869 participants answering the relevant questions. These are self-reported awareness and use figures, not spending amounts. |
| Payment methods | 58% reported using virtual currency obtained without spending money; 54% virtual currency bought with money; 51% their own bank-account money; 50% gift cards. | UK Gambling Commission, 2024; 1,004 UK young people who had paid to open loot boxes, packs or chests. Multiple answers were allowed, so the percentages overlap and must not be added. |
| Spending per purchase | 39% reported typically spending more than £10 per loot-box purchase; 61% less than £10. | A player survey summarized in the UK government’s 2022 evidence response. It is an older survey result, not a current universal average. |
| Historical market estimate | More than $15 billion in 2020. | Juniper Research (2021), as cited in Amano and Simonov’s 2024 paper. This is a historical estimate, not a 2026 total or the authors’ own market census. |
The UK government cautions that evidence submissions vary by method and platform, and that some statistics do not account for how popular different games are. Those limitations make a single cross-market spending figure especially difficult to infer from isolated surveys or game data.
How do loot boxes work?
A loot box is a game feature that gives a player an apparently randomized item: the specific contents are not known until the box is opened. A player might earn one through gameplay, buy one directly, or use virtual currency to obtain it. Some rewards are cosmetic; others may help with progression or competition. Not every box costs money, and not every randomized purchase is necessarily called a loot box.

The ESRB uses the label “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)” for paid digital goods or premiums whose specific contents are unknown before purchase, including loot boxes, item packs and mystery awards. It says, “We want to ensure that the new label covers all transactions with randomized elements.” The label’s broader wording reflects that randomized purchase mechanics can take forms beyond what players commonly call loot boxes.
A known cosmetic or item bought for a stated price is not the same transaction as paying for an unknown reward. The uncertainty about what the buyer will receive is central to the randomized-purchase category.

How do people pay for loot boxes?
Payment can be direct or indirect. A player may pay with money, buy virtual currency first, or use currency earned in the game. In the UK Gambling Commission’s 2024 survey of 1,004 young people who had paid to open loot boxes, packs or chests, respondents could report more than one payment method: 58% reported using currency obtained without spending, 54% currency bought with money, 51% their own bank-account money and 50% gift cards. The overlap means these are not exclusive shares of spending.
Virtual-currency bundles can make the real price harder to track: a bundle may cost more than the purchase requires and leave a balance too small for another item, which can encourage a further purchase. The UK government’s 2022 evidence response also records player complaints about unclear odds and difficulty finding cumulative purchase histories. These are reported concerns, not proof that every game has the same design.

Are loot boxes gambling?
That depends on the game mechanic and the legal definition being applied; the evidence here does not establish a universal legal classification for every loot box. The UK government reports an association between loot-box purchases and problem gambling, but says the evidence has not established that loot boxes cause problem gambling. An association alone does not demonstrate causation.
In a 2024 study, Tomomichi Amano and Andrey Simonov analyzed transaction and gameplay data from one prototypical mobile game. Their model estimated that regular players’ spending value was primarily complementary to gameplay, while high spenders’ modeled value came largely from the lottery mechanism itself. Their simulations favored spending caps over a blanket ban: “Our estimates favor spending caps over a blanket ban on loot boxes.” That is a result for their dataset and modeling assumptions, not a finding that necessarily applies to every game, player or policy setting.

The Norwegian Consumer Council has argued that companies should avoid manipulative design, make prices transparent and protect minors. Those are the organization’s recommendations, not a statement of settled law or universal regulatory consensus.

Before buying, look at the design of the specific game rather than assuming every randomized item works the same way. These checks help reveal the likely cost and how much control a player or parent has:

- Great Gift For Gamers Perfect for PC gamers, console players, collectors, and anyone building a unique gaming setup
- Access: Can the box be earned through play, bought directly, or opened only after purchasing virtual currency?
- Uncertainty: Are the possible items and odds clearly shown before purchase, or is the reward still unknown?
- Price visibility: Is the real-money cost clear, or must you convert from a currency bundle that may leave unused balance?
- Reward impact: Is the reward cosmetic, or could it affect progression or competitive play?
- Spending oversight: Can you review a usable purchase history, set a spending limit if the game or platform offers one, and require parental authorization for a child’s purchases?
If you choose to buy, decide on a real-money limit in advance and track purchases against it. Check the transaction history where available rather than relying on memory, particularly when purchases use virtual currency. For a child’s account, confirm what purchase authorization and spending controls the relevant game or platform actually provides; availability and settings can differ.
