To make only text larger, use the text-size setting for your Windows version. To enlarge text, icons, and app controls together, change display scaling. For a temporary close-up, use Magnifier.
Choose what you want to make larger

Change text size in Windows 11
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Text size. Or press Windows key + U to open Accessibility settings.
- Move the Text size slider to the right. Check the sample text as you adjust it.
- Select Apply.
This changes Windows text, including title bars, menus, and icon labels, without changing display resolution. See Microsoft’s Windows accessibility display guidance.
Change text size in Windows 10
- Open Settings > Ease of Access > Display. Or press Windows key + U to open Ease of Access.
- Under Make text bigger, move the slider to the right.
- Apply the change.
Windows 10 uses a different settings path and label from Windows 11. Microsoft’s accessibility instructions cover both versions.
Make apps and other interface items larger
If icons and app controls are also too small, use display scaling rather than the text-only slider:

- Open Settings > System > Display.
- If you use more than one display, select the display you want to adjust.
- Under Scale & layout, choose a larger value from Scale. Microsoft advises choosing the option marked Recommended.
Most scaling changes apply immediately, but some apps may need you to sign out and back in. See Microsoft’s guidance on making text and apps bigger and changing display resolution and layout.
Zoom temporarily with Magnifier
Magnifier enlarges part or all of the screen for a close-up without changing your persistent text-size setting.

- Press Windows key + Plus (+) to start Magnifier and zoom in.
- Press Windows key + Minus (-) to zoom out.
- Press Windows key + Esc to close Magnifier.
Microsoft lists these controls in its instructions for quickly changing Magnifier’s zoom level and its Magnifier guide.
Why you should not lower the resolution to enlarge text
Display resolution and text size are different settings. Microsoft recommends using the display’s marked resolution. A lower-than-native resolution can make text less sharp and may make the image appear small, centered with borders, or stretched. For readability, try Text size or Scale before changing resolution.

Windows 10 support status
As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Microsoft says the PC will continue to work and recommends moving to Windows 11. This support change does not alter the Windows 10 text-size steps above.
