Create a separate Windows 11 account for everyday work under Settings > Accounts > Other users > Add account, then make sure its account type is Standard User. Keep an administrator account available for system changes and recovery. A new account gets its own profile; Windows does not automatically move your existing files and app settings into it.
Choose the account type that fits daily use
The key decision for this purpose is whether the account is a standard user or an administrator. It can be linked to a Microsoft account or be local; either way, choose Standard User for routine activity. Microsoft advises that “It’s safer to have fewer administrators and to use standard user accounts for day-to-day activities.” Microsoft’s account-management guidance explains that administrators can change settings, install software, and access all files.

Microsoft account or local account
A Microsoft account connects Windows sign-in with Microsoft services and may sync settings and files across devices. A local account is specific to that device, does not require an internet connection to sign in, and is not connected to Microsoft cloud services. - Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Under Add other user, select Add account.
- To use a Microsoft account, enter that person’s email address and follow the prompts.
- To make a local account, select I don’t have this person’s sign-in information, then select Add a user without a Microsoft account. Complete the prompts.
These steps follow Microsoft’s documented process in Manage User Accounts in Windows. Interface wording can vary as Windows is updated.

Make sure the account is a Standard User
Windows may create the account with the standard-user type by default, but verify it before using the account every day:
- In Settings > Accounts > Other users, find the new account.
- Open its account menu or flyout and select Change account type.
- Choose Standard User, then select OK.
The same account-type menu can be used to change the type later. Avoid changing the new everyday account to administrator unless it needs those broader permissions.

Sign in and set up the separate profile
To switch to the new account, open Start, select the user picture or account icon, then select the other account. Microsoft says switching accounts does not close the existing session or its applications; save your work before switching as a precaution. See Microsoft’s user-account access guidance.
Each Windows user has separate settings, documents, and applications. The new account is a separate profile, not an automatic migration of the old account’s files or app settings. Sign in and configure the apps and files you need there.

Keep administrator access available
Retain access to an administrator account and its credentials for system changes and account recovery. For local accounts, Microsoft warns that if no administrator account is available to change a local user’s password, resetting the Windows device may be necessary. Do not assume a forgotten local password can always be recovered; see Microsoft’s local-account password guidance.
