A blank screen, “No signal” message, flickering picture, or intermittent audio can point to an HDMI cable—but none proves the cable is faulty. First check the input and connections, then substitute a known-working cable without changing the rest of the setup. If the replacement works and the original does not, the original cable is a strong suspect.

What HDMI cable problems can look like

A cable that is damaged or unable to carry the signal you are using may cause a display to lose the picture or behave inconsistently. But the same symptoms can come from a powered-off source, a wrong input, a faulty port, a device setting, or another part of the connection. Treat symptoms as clues, not a diagnosis.

  • No signal or a blank screen: The display may be on the wrong HDMI input, the source may be asleep, or the connection may be failing.
  • Intermittent picture or audio: A loose connection or a problem with the cable, port, source, or display can interrupt the signal.
  • Works at one video setting but not another: The cable may not support the bandwidth required by the higher resolution, refresh rate, or features.

How to test whether the cable is the problem

Change one thing at a time. A known-working cable swap is the clearest basic test because it helps separate the cable from the source and display. Microsoft recommends changing the cable when troubleshooting an external monitor; Samsung also advises checking the connection, input, ports, and cable.

  1. Check the source and input. Make sure the connected device is powered on and awake. On the TV or monitor, select the HDMI input matching the port in use.
  2. Reconnect both ends. Unplug the cable at the source and display, then firmly reconnect it. If the setup includes several devices or accessories, simplify it and test one connection at a time.
  3. Try another HDMI port. Move the cable to a different port on the display, then select the input for that port. This helps identify a port-specific issue.
  4. Swap in a known-working cable. Keep the same source, display, ports, and signal settings if possible. If the replacement works under the same conditions and the original does not, the original cable is likely defective or unsuitable for that signal.
  5. If the replacement also fails, test other parts. Where possible, try another source or display and continue checking ports and settings. The failed swap alone does not prove whether the original cable is good or bad.
  6. Compare signal settings. If a cable works at a lower resolution or refresh rate but not a higher one, check whether its cable type supports the bandwidth the source and display require.

Some TVs include a built-in HDMI cable or connection test, but its availability and menu path vary by model. Check the TV maker’s instructions for your specific model. Samsung’s guidance describes this kind of test where available: Samsung HDMI connection troubleshooting.

Check that the cable matches your video signal

An HDMI connector does not guarantee that a cable can carry every resolution, refresh rate, or feature. HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. (HDMI LA) describes these cable classes and their stated capabilities:

Cable class Stated capability or example use
Standard HDMI Cable Designed for earlier applications, including 720p or 1080i.
High Speed HDMI Cable Up to 10.2 Gbps; includes applications such as 4K at 30 Hz.
Premium High Speed HDMI Cable Certified for 18 Gbps; includes applications such as 4K at 60 Hz and HDR.
Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable Up to 48 Gbps; supports high-bandwidth modes including 4K at 120 Hz and 8K at 60 Hz.
Ultra96 HDMI Cable Up to 96 Gbps for the HDMI 2.2 specification’s highest-bandwidth applications.

These figures describe cable bandwidth capabilities, not failure rates. The right class depends on the requirements of both the source and the display; a higher class is not automatically necessary. See HDMI LA’s cable type overview, its Ultra High Speed cable guidance, and its HDMI 2.2 information.

How to identify a certified replacement

When shopping, use the official cable type and the source and display’s supported video modes—not reseller descriptions alone—to judge whether a cable fits your setup. HDMI LA says the official cable name should appear on the cable jacket, with the relevant name logo or certification label on the package. For Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 cables, scan the certification label’s QR code to check product details and certification status.

Also compare the cable length and connector type with your setup. HDMI LA notes that reseller marketing terms may not use official cable designations, so look for the official name and applicable certification rather than relying on a generic claim. Its cable-shopping guidance explains the labeling approach.

When the evidence points away from the cable

If the original and a known-working replacement both fail with the same source and display, investigate the input selection, source, display port, and signal settings rather than concluding that either cable is at fault. Try the source with another display or the display with another source if available. For Windows external-monitor issues, Microsoft’s steps are at Troubleshoot external monitor connections in Windows; Samsung’s device-specific picture troubleshooting is at Problems with the picture on a Samsung TV or projector.
