To convert a file, identify its current format and the format you need, then use an application that documents support for that exact input-to-output conversion. Convert a copy, open the result in the app where you plan to use it, and check that its content and formatting survived. Renaming the file extension alone does not convert it.
What file conversion does—and what it does not do
File conversion creates a new file in a different format so it can be used for a particular purpose, such as sharing a document as a PDF or preparing media for an application. Support is directional: an app that converts one format to another may not support the reverse conversion.
Changing a filename from, for example, report.docx to report.pdf only changes its name. It does not rewrite the file’s contents into PDF format. Check the actual source format and choose a converter that supports both that input and the intended output.

- Make a copy. Keep the source intact in case the conversion changes or removes content.
- Identify the source and target formats. Use the actual file type, not just a renamed extension, and decide which format the recipient or destination app needs.
- Choose a converter with documented support. Confirm that it accepts your source format and can produce the target format. If the file is sensitive, prefer local software unless you have reviewed an online service’s terms and file-handling practices.
- Set relevant options. Depending on the file type and converter, options may include PDF page range or image compression, or media codec and quality settings.
- Convert the copy and inspect the result. Open it in the application where it will be used. Check important text, layout, formulas, animations, metadata, or embedded media as applicable.
- Keep the original if edits may be needed. A converted copy may be harder to revise or may not preserve all of the source’s features.
Convert documents, images, or web pages to PDF
Using Adobe Acrobat
Adobe’s supported-format page lists DOC and DOCX, XLS and XLSX, PPT and PPTX, TXT, RTF, HTML, common bitmap image formats, and several OpenDocument and StarOffice formats as inputs for PDF conversion. Some older or specialized document formats require their originating application and use of the Adobe PDF printer. This is an official Adobe India compatibility listing, marked last updated 31 August 2026; available formats may vary by region and Acrobat version, so check the listing that applies to your setup: Supported file formats in Adobe Acrobat.

Using LibreOffice
LibreOffice can export Writer, Calc, Impress, and Draw documents to PDF. Its guide distinguishes exporting—which creates a PDF without changing the original document’s format—from Save As. Use the PDF export dialog when you need controls such as page range or image compression; the quick, direct PDF route does not offer all of them. See the LibreOffice 26.2 guide to file formats, security, and exporting.
PDF is a practical choice when recipients need to view a document but are not expected to edit it. If they need to revise the contents, retain and share an editable source format as well.

Convert audio or video
For media, check both the container format and the codecs used inside it. A converter’s general support for a format does not guarantee that the particular installed build can read or write every codec. FFmpeg documents -formats and -codecs as options for listing formats and codecs available in a given build; consult its supported formats and codecs documentation and verify the capabilities of the build you use.
Operating-system support can also affect which media files an application can open. LibreOffice’s documentation describes Windows support through DirectShow filters, GNU/Linux support through GStreamer, and macOS support for QuickTime-supported formats. A file that works on one computer may therefore fail to open on another. See LibreOffice’s audio and video documentation.

Choose an output format for the job
- Purpose: Decide whether the recipient needs to edit or collaborate on the file, or simply view and share it.
- Fidelity: Identify the features that matter, such as fonts, layout, formulas, animations, metadata, or embedded media, and check them after conversion.
- Compatibility: Verify that the specific converter, operating system, and installed build support both formats.
- Controls: Check whether you can set options such as page range, compression, resolution, codec, or bitrate when they matter.
- Privacy: An upload-based service requires sending the file to that service. Review its terms and handling practices before uploading sensitive material; do not assume an online converter keeps files private.
For images, choose based on how the result will be used. If transparency or further editing matters, preserve those properties where the chosen format and converter allow it. The compatibility information cited above establishes that Acrobat can accept common image inputs for PDF conversion; it does not establish comparative image quality or lossless and lossy settings for other image formats.

Conversion can alter content or formatting. Microsoft notes that some information may be lost when OpenDocument presentations are saved and opened in PowerPoint. Treat the output as a new copy to verify rather than assuming it is identical to the source. Microsoft documents format considerations in its file format reference for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
