A spin wheel makes a group choice visible, but the active entries and settings determine who or what can win. For a clear, trustworthy activity, tell participants what the wheel is choosing, show what is eligible, and explain whether repeats or winner removal are allowed before you spin. Random selection can still produce repeats, and a short run does not guarantee balanced results.
What a spin wheel is good for
A browser-based spinner can make a routine low-stakes selection easy to follow: choose a discussion question, presentation order, group role, activity, or review prompt. The Maricopa Community Colleges Center for Learning and Teaching describes a spinner as “a roulette-style wheel similar to those used for giveaways” in its Active Learning Kit. Wheel of Names also documents classroom selection, event prize draws, dinner choices, party games, and live streaming as uses for its wheel.
To run a shared activity, prepare the entries in a browser wheel, share or project the screen, and spin where participants can see the list and result. Wheel of Names says its wheel can be used as a browser source in OBS or Streamlabs; that is the vendor’s documented setup, not an independently tested integration. Keep the entries and result visible long enough for the group to understand what happened.
Decide what counts as eligible before spinning
The wheel selects from its active entries, not from an unspoken idea of who or what “should” be included. Before the draw, state the choice being made and the eligibility rule. For a name wheel, remove absent or ineligible participants; for a topic wheel, use labels that are distinct enough to understand at a glance.
#1 Best Overall
- Customizable wheel content for any decision-making scenario.
- Multiple wheel designs and colors to choose from.
- Simple and intuitive user interface.
- Adjustable wheel sections to accommodate any number of options.
- Option to remove or modify wheel sections after each spin.
Equal chance applies to active entries only when the selection mode gives them equal weight. Changes to the list or settings change the outcome possibilities:
- Duplicate entries: An option listed more than once has more selectable entries and therefore a larger share of them. Explain intentional duplicates rather than presenting the wheel as equal across distinct options.
- Weighted selection: A weighting setting changes the odds from equal-entry selection. Make it visible and explain it before the draw.
- Disabled or removed entries: These are not eligible for the current selection.
- Winner removal: Taking a winner out changes the eligible pool for later spins.
- History-based rotation: A mode that adjusts selection based on past results is not the same as independent, equal-chance draws.
Wheel Names’ Randomness and Fairness guide describes these mechanics and recommends making the active list and probability-changing settings clear when trust matters.

Choose whether results can repeat
For a single selection, equal-entry random selection is a straightforward default. For several independent spins, a result may appear more than once; random does not mean that each option must appear once before any repeats. Wheel of Names’ FAQ gives a probability example: with 10 entries and 5 spins, the chance of at least one repeated entry is 69.8%. That is the FAQ’s example, not a guarantee that a repeat will occur.
If the activity is meant to give each person one turn, say so in advance and remove each winner consistently, or use an explicitly documented rotation mode. In either case, participants should know that the eligible pool changes after a selection. If repeats are acceptable, leave the entries in place and make that rule clear.

Make the draw easy to follow
- Describe the choice: Say whether the wheel selects a person, topic, role, prize, or activity.
- Show the final entries: Make the eligible list visible and resolve absences or ambiguous labels before the spin.
- State the settings that affect selection: Tell participants whether entries are weighted or duplicated, whether repeats are allowed, and whether a winner comes out before another draw.
- Share the wheel: Project the browser or share the screen or stream so participants can see the list and result.
- Apply the announced rule consistently: If winners are removed, remove them before the next spin; if repeats are allowed, keep the list unchanged.
For a formal prize draw or another situation where participants need to verify what happened, retain the announced rules, final list, settings, and result. A timestamped receipt or hash may help preserve a record, but it does not by itself prove that the original entries were complete or eligible.
Use it for suitable choices—not consequential judgments
A wheel can facilitate routine participation, activity prompts, or everyday group choices. It should not replace safeguarding, accessibility adjustments, professional judgment, legal obligations, or individualized decisions. Wheel Names states this boundary in its About page. If a choice materially affects someone’s rights, safety, or individual needs, use an appropriate decision process rather than a random draw.

Why a short run may look uneven
A random process does not promise an even split in a small number of attempts. Wheel of Names’ FAQ uses another example: the chance of exactly five heads in ten coin tosses is 24.6%. The same general point applies to a wheel: a streak or repeated outcome is not, by itself, evidence that the selection was not random. The list, weighting, and eligibility rules still matter, so make those visible rather than treating a surprising result as proof of fairness or unfairness.
