Stanley Black & Decker’s 2021 acquisition announcement named seven outdoor-equipment brands: Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Robomow, Rover, WOLF-Garten, Hustler and BigDog. That is a historical acquisition list, not a reliable current list: on September 4, 2026, the company announced an agreement to sell Excel Industries, which owns Hustler and BigDog, but said regulatory approval and other closing conditions were still outstanding. Its announcement also named five Outdoor brands it planned to keep growing: Cub Cadet, DEWALT, Craftsman, Troy-Bilt and BLACK+DECKER.
Which seven brands were named in the 2021 acquisitions?
Stanley Black & Decker completed its acquisitions of MTD Holdings and Excel Industries on December 1, 2021. The company’s release listed five MTD brands and two Excel brands:
| Brand | Company named in the 2021 acquisition release |
|---|---|
| Cub Cadet | MTD |
| Troy-Bilt | MTD |
| Robomow | MTD |
| Rover | MTD |
| WOLF-Garten | MTD |
| Hustler | Excel Industries |
| BigDog | Excel Industries |
This seven-name count is grounded in the brands identified in the acquisition announcement. It should not be read as a current, exhaustive list of every brand with mower products. Stanley Black & Decker said it acquired the remaining 80% of MTD ownership to complete that purchase. The December 1, 2021 acquisition release also says MTD was founded in 1932.
What changed after Stanley Black & Decker announced the Excel sale?
On September 4, 2026, Stanley Black & Decker announced a definitive agreement to sell Excel Industries to Bad Boy Mowers. The release said the transaction remained subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions; it did not announce a completed sale. So Hustler and BigDog belong on the 2021 acquisition list, but the September 2026 announcement does not establish that Excel had left Stanley Black & Decker’s ownership by that date.

In the same release, the company said it remained committed to growing these Outdoor brands: Cub Cadet, DEWALT, Craftsman, Troy-Bilt and BLACK+DECKER. That is a stated growth focus, not a complete inventory of all current mower-related brands. The release expected Excel to generate approximately $300 million in fiscal 2026 revenue; that figure was a forecast, not a reported full-year result. Read the September 4, 2026 announcement for the transaction status and company wording.
Does Stanley Black & Decker own Cub Cadet, Craftsman or Troy-Bilt?
- Cub Cadet: Yes. Stanley Black & Decker’s Cub Cadet brand page says it joined the company’s family of brands in 2021. The page describes gas and electric outdoor equipment and features electric mowers. It says the first Cub Cadet mower entered the market in 1961. See the Cub Cadet brand page.
- Troy-Bilt: It was one of the MTD brands in the 2021 acquisition, and the September 2026 announcement names it among the Outdoor brands Stanley Black & Decker planned to keep growing.
- Craftsman: The September 2026 announcement names it among those same Outdoor brands. It is not one of the seven brands listed in the 2021 MTD-and-Excel acquisition release.
DEWALT and BLACK+DECKER also appear in the company’s September 2026 Outdoor growth list, but neither is part of that seven-brand acquisition list. The company’s Outdoor page features products and links to brands and replacement parts; it is not presented as a complete ownership register.

Are all seven brands mower brands?
The 2021 release identifies these names as part of MTD’s and Excel’s brand families; it does not establish that each has the same kind or breadth of mower lineup. Cub Cadet is a direct example: its company page describes outdoor equipment, including gas and electric mowers. The September 2026 release describes Excel’s products in the ride-on and zero-turn category. The available company statements do not provide model-by-model performance comparisons or evidence to rank brands on durability.
How to choose a mower from these brands
Ownership alone is not a buying recommendation. Match the machine to the yard and the support available where you live:
Rank #3
- 13 Amp motor supplies ample power for cutting through thick grass and overgrowth
- 20-inch 3-in-1 electric mower is great for mulching, bagging, and side discharge for multiple mowing modes
- EdgeMax deck design of the push lawn mower is made for close up to the edge cutting
- Single lever easily adjusts the height of cut with 7 settings between 1 1/2 inch- 4 inch
- 13 GAL. Fabric Grass Bag - Fabric design makes it easy to determine if the bag is full.
- Yard size and terrain: Consider the area to mow, obstacles, slopes and ground conditions before choosing a walk-behind or riding format.
- Power source: Compare gas and battery options based on the yard, charging or refueling convenience, and the equipment lineup available in your area. Cub Cadet’s company page confirms both gas and electric outdoor equipment, but does not establish that every model is offered in both types.
- Deck width and format: Choose a deck and machine style suited to the space and access routes. For larger areas, compare riding options; Excel’s release identifies ride-on and zero-turn products, without providing a model-level performance ranking.
- Local service and parts: Check whether nearby dealers or repair shops support the specific model. For replacement blades and other parts, match by exact model and product details rather than brand name alone.
