Virtual surround sound is audio processing that makes sound played through a limited number of speakers—or headphones—seem to come from positions beyond the physical playback devices. It creates spatial cues; it does not place actual speakers around the room. The result depends on the technology, device, setup, room and listener.

How virtual surround sound works

Our ears use differences in timing, loudness and tone, along with reflections from the room, to help locate sounds. Virtual surround processing alters playback to reproduce some of those directional cues. The brain interprets them as sounds coming from different places.

Unlike discrete surround sound, which sends separate channels to speakers physically positioned around the listener, virtual surround aims to create a spatial impression with fewer playback devices. Dolby’s overview explains the directional cues involved in surround sound: Dolby’s guide to surround sound.

How headphones create a surround effect

With ordinary stereo playback, headphone drivers sit close to the ears, so much of the sound image seems to be inside or near the listener’s head. Virtualized headphone surround processes cues based on how sound reaches each ear. These can include head-related transfer function (HRTF) characteristics, such as differences in response between the near and far ear and the delay between the ears. The brain uses those cues to infer direction and a surrounding acoustic space.

Microsoft describes headphone virtualization as allowing listeners to distinguish sound from front to back as well as from side to side. Its documentation covers Windows headphone virtualization specifically: Microsoft Learn: Virtualized Surround Sound Over Headphones. Headphone surround is a processing feature, so check that the device, software or platform supports the mode you want; a particular branded headset is not inherently required.

How soundbars simulate surround and height

Soundbar methods vary by product. A soundbar may use HRTF-based processing and cross-talk cancellation to reproduce at the listener’s ears cues associated with speakers around the room. Height virtualization can use filters to mimic some spectral cues of overhead sound, mixing those elements through listener-level speakers rather than using physical ceiling speakers.

Reflections also matter. Side-firing effects rely on room walls, while up-firing effects need a suitable ceiling and an unobstructed path upward. A cabinet or soffit that blocks up-firing drivers can interfere with the intended effect. Virtual surround versus discrete surround

Aspect Virtual surround Discrete surround
Physical setup Uses processing with fewer playback devices, such as a soundbar or headphones. Uses separate speakers placed at physical positions around the listening area.
How direction is conveyed Simulates directional cues through signal processing; perceived locations do not correspond to speakers at each location. Plays channels through speakers positioned to provide sound from different directions.
Room dependence Can depend on room reflections and placement, especially for soundbar side- or up-firing effects. Depends on speaker placement and the listening room, but uses physical speakers at the intended positions.
Practical fit May suit a space where adding rear or ceiling speakers is impractical. Requires space and placement for the additional speakers.

Neither label guarantees a particular listening experience. Virtualization depends on the processing implementation and how a listener perceives its cues; a mode that suggests a rear or overhead position to one person may be less convincing to another.

What to check before choosing a virtual surround mode

  • Confirm device and format support. A feature name alone does not establish that a TV, receiver, soundbar, headphones or playback platform accepts a particular signal. Check the product’s specifications and setup instructions.
  • Check placement requirements. For soundbars, avoid blocking upward-firing drivers and consider whether nearby walls can support reflected effects.
  • Understand what the feature promises. Virtual surround is an intended spatial effect, not a guarantee of precise rear or overhead positioning for every listener.

Examples of virtual surround technologies

DTS Virtual:X is one named example. DTS says the feature can provide a virtual surround experience through supported soundbars, TV speakers and AV receivers with as few as two speakers. Availability and operation depend on the specific device: DTS listening technologies.

DTS Headphone:X is a separate headphone technology whose integrations and settings are configured with device partners. Its operation is therefore not necessarily identical across products: DTS’s explanation of Headphone:X.

These are vendor descriptions of their technologies, not evidence that one implementation performs better than another. Dolby also notes that soundbar implementations can differ: Dolby’s explanation of immersive audio.
