A useful contractor credential check should identify the right person or business, show what work the credential covers, report current standing and relevant dates, surface applicable compliance records, and say where and when the result was checked. A separate, dated revocation event can make a credential’s history clearer—but the available official sources do not establish a universal five-field legal standard or show that every licensing authority publishes revocation as a distinct event.
What should a contractor credential check return?
The five-field structure below is a proposed interoperable response schema for organizations that need to check credentials across jurisdictions. It is not a claim that every regulator requires these exact fields. The information a particular project must collect depends on location, license type, and the work being performed.
| Field | What the result should include | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Identity | The issuing authority, jurisdiction, credential or license number, credential holder’s name, and matching business or legal-entity identity where applicable. | It connects the result to the correct person or company rather than a similar name. |
| 2. Scope | The license classification or category, plus the jurisdiction that defines it. | A current credential does not, by itself, show that the holder is authorized for the specific type of work. |
| 3. Standing and dates | The authority’s current status, the date the status was checked, and relevant issue and expiration dates when published. | Status is a snapshot; dates help a verifier judge whether the credential covers the time period that matters. |
| 4. Related compliance evidence | Applicable bond, insurance or workers’ compensation details, and relevant disciplinary or enforcement disclosures. Include local business-license details when required. | These records may be separate from license status and can be subject to different rules or exceptions. |
| 5. Provenance and change | The source authority, the time of the lookup, and—if the authority supplies it—dated events such as suspension, cancellation, or revocation. | It makes the result’s origin and timing visible and distinguishes a current status from a record of what changed. |
For automation, keep the source’s wording and any source-provided effective dates alongside normalized values. If an authority does not publish a value or event, represent it as unavailable rather than inferring it from another field.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy is revocation different from current status?
A status value answers a question about the credential as represented at the time of the lookup. A revocation event answers a different question: whether the authority recorded a withdrawal, and when it took effect. A status such as inactive may not explain why a credential is inactive; disciplinary history may not identify the effective date of a revocation. Those values should not be treated as interchangeable.

A well-designed response can therefore include both a current status and a dated event record, with the event type and effective date supplied by the issuing authority. But this is a data-design recommendation, not evidence that every contractor board offers an event feed or a separate revocation field. A downstream service also cannot make a regulator’s record authoritative if the regulator does not publish the underlying information; that is a provenance limitation, not a reason to guess.
The title’s “one nobody ships” framing is too broad to verify from the available vendor evidence. The defensible point is narrower: a distinct revocation event is useful to request and assess, and a current status field alone may not expose that history.

What do official requirements and records show?
U.S. requirements vary. These examples illustrate why a common response schema should not be mistaken for a universal checklist.
| Source and context | What it establishes | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| City of San Diego contractor and subcontractor verification (accessed October 7, 2026) | For certain covered projects, permit holders must obtain information including a state license number, category, and expiration date; city business-license information and expiration; workers’ compensation policy number and expiration; tax IDs; and disclosures of specified labor enforcement actions or penalties. The page says the state lookup can be searched by license number, name, or business name and can show status, insurance and bond information, and license actions. | Use the local project rule to determine the required collection; do not assume a state lookup alone satisfies it. |
| California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) public-record information (accessed October 7, 2026) | The listed information includes license number, business name and address, original issue date, current expiration date, classifications, bond company information, workers’ compensation information, and general-liability information for LLCs. The page also identifies categories of personal information not supplied in that dataset. | Check the actual fields and limits of the record being used; a public record is not necessarily a complete compliance file. |
| CSLB workers’ compensation filing guidance (accessed October 7, 2026) | The guidance describes policy identity and coverage dates on the certificate and requires an authorized insurer representative’s signature. It also describes exceptions, including exemption processes. | Do not represent workers’ compensation coverage as identical for every contractor; check the applicable exemption and filing rules. |
| CSLB presentation of Business and Professions Code section 7125 (accessed October 7, 2026) | The page describes covered licensees’ workers’ compensation evidence and insurer reporting of name, license number, policy number, scheduled start and lapse dates, and an applicable cancellation date. It says the section is repealed effective January 1, 2028. | Because the page identifies a future repeal, verify the current statute and official guidance before relying on this provision after that date. |
| Mississippi procurement specification | For roles requiring special licensing, the procurement document calls for credential verification fields including current status, issue date, expiration date, and disciplinary-action record. | This is a procurement requirement, not a general contractor licensing law. |
| Florida Statutes, 2024 edition, section 489.115 | The cited statute describes insurance attestations for the specified certification or registration process and criminal-history checks. | Applicability depends on the license category and the specific statutory provision; do not generalize it to all contractors. |
| Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors application information | The application page describes insurance and external credential requirements for applicable license categories. | Consult the board’s requirements for the relevant category rather than assuming one rule covers every license. |
How can you use the fields to verify a contractor?
- Identify the applicable authority and rule. Start with the project location, type of work, and credential category. Check whether local permitting or procurement requirements add information beyond the state license lookup.
- Search by a reliable identifier. Use the license number when available. Where the official service permits it, search by name or business name and match the result to the contracting person or legal entity. San Diego’s page describes all three search options for its state lookup.
- Confirm scope and standing. Match the listed classification to the work, then note the authority’s status and the relevant dates. Do not treat a status label as proof that the credential covers every kind of construction work.
- Check the applicable compliance records. Look for the bond, insurance, workers’ compensation, local license, or enforcement information required for that jurisdiction and project. Read exemptions and exceptions rather than assuming a missing policy record has only one explanation.
- Save provenance with the result. Retain the issuing authority, lookup time, and the returned data. If the source reports a dated action, preserve its type and effective date separately from current status.
What should organizations compare when evaluating a checking method?
Whether the check is done manually or through a data service, evaluate the evidence returned rather than relying on a broad claim that a credential is “verified.” Ask:

- Which jurisdictions and issuing authorities are covered?
- Can the result resolve an individual or legal entity to the correct credential and classification?
- Does it return current status, issue and expiration dates, and applicable bond, insurance, disciplinary, or enforcement details?
- Does it identify the source and time of the check, and distinguish current values from dated events?
- How does it represent exceptions such as inactive credentials, exemptions, policy lapses, or cancellations?
These are comparison criteria, not claims about features offered by any particular vendor. Ask for current product documentation that defines field names, source authorities, update timing, and how unavailable or conflicting records are represented.
