The RedMagic Astra 2 is a compact Android tablet built around a fast, vivid OLED screen and gaming performance. In Anthony Spadafora’s September 26, 2026 Tom’s Guide review, its display was the standout, and its benchmark results topped the iPad mini 7 and Lenovo Tab Gen 2 in the tests reported. The trade-offs: battery life was not the longest in the comparison, the review found its controller setup awkward, and the tablet did not include a case.
What makes the Astra 2 stand out?
Its 9.06-inch OLED display combines a 2,400 × 1,504 resolution with a 185Hz refresh rate. In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 measurements, it reached 659 nits in SDR and 1,030 nits in HDR. The same review measured 198.8% sRGB coverage, 141.5% DCI-P3 coverage, and a 0.31 Delta-E result. These figures describe that publication’s test results, not a guarantee for every unit or viewing condition.
The screen is compact enough for handheld use but has more room than a phone for games and video. The high refresh rate is aimed at smoother motion in content that can take advantage of it; it does not mean every game runs at 185 frames per second.

How does it compare in performance and battery life?
Tom’s Guide tested the Astra 2 against the iPad mini 7 and Lenovo Tab Gen 2. The review reports the following Geekbench 6 and 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited results. They are results from that review’s tests; the source does not establish that every testing condition was identical across devices.

| Tablet | Geekbench 6 single-core / multi-core | 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited score / frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| RedMagic Astra 2 | 3,771 / 11,979 | 7,993 / 47.87 fps |

| Lenovo Tab Gen 2 | 1,125 / 3,417 | 1,063 / 6.37 fps |
The Astra 2’s reported results lead both comparison devices in these benchmarks. Benchmarks are useful for comparing performance in specific tests, but they do not establish how every game will behave or how well a tablet will suit someone’s apps.
Battery results in Tom’s Guide’s test
| Tablet and refresh rate | Reported battery life |
|---|---|
| Astra 2 at 60Hz | 11 hours 28 minutes |
| Astra 2 at 185Hz | 11 hours 10 minutes |
| iPad mini 7 at 60Hz | 10 hours 34 minutes |
| Lenovo Tab Gen 2 at 60Hz | 16 hours |
| Lenovo Tab Gen 2 at 120Hz | 13 hours 39 minutes |
These are Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test results, not a prediction of every owner’s battery life. In that comparison, Lenovo lasted longer; Astra 2’s reported result changed little between its 60Hz and 185Hz settings.

What hardware and gaming features does it offer?
Tom’s Guide lists a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5X memory, and 256GB or 512GB of storage. The battery is rated at 8,300mAh. The tablet measures 8.15 × 5.28 × 0.27 inches and weighs 0.8 pounds (363g), making portability part of its appeal.

The review describes using an external display, as well as connecting VITURE Pro 2 smart glasses for films. These are examples from the reviewer’s setup, not assurances of compatibility with every monitor, dock, accessory, or app.
Is it comfortable to use as a handheld?
Not without considering how your accessories fit. The reviewer tried a Razer Kishi Ultra telescopic controller and found the placement of the more capable USB-C port awkward for that setup. A controller that works with another tablet or phone may not fit or connect conveniently here, so check the specific controller’s fit and port requirements before buying.

The gaming launcher switch is intended to make it easier to move into a gaming-focused interface. But the controller experience described in the review is a reminder that a powerful compact tablet is not automatically as seamless to hold and play as a dedicated handheld.

Tom’s Guide listed the Astra 2 at $699 for the 12GB/256GB configuration and $799 for 16GB/512GB in its September 2026 review. Those are dated review prices, not verified current offers; pricing and stock may vary by seller and region.

- No included case: The review criticized the omission and noted a preference for a protective case with a stand. It did not verify a particular Astra 2 case.
- Accessory fit matters: The reviewer’s Kishi Ultra setup was awkward because of the capable USB-C port’s position.
- PC-game results were mixed: GameHub provides an option to try PC games, but the reviewer’s experience was not uniformly smooth.
- Battery endurance depends on the comparison: The reported Astra 2 test result was shorter than Lenovo’s at both refresh-rate settings tested.
Who should consider the RedMagic Astra 2?
It is a strong candidate for someone who wants a small Android tablet with a high-refresh OLED screen and gaming-focused hardware, and who values the benchmark performance reported by Tom’s Guide. It is less compelling for a buyer whose priorities are the longest battery life in this comparison, an included protective case, or a controller setup known to fit without awkward port positioning.
Spadafora’s verdict was personal: “It’s one of the best Android tablets I’ve tried yet, and while using it, I didn’t miss my iPad mini at all.” That is the reviewer’s experience, not an objective consensus or a claim that the Astra 2 is right for every compact-tablet buyer.
