To troubleshoot Wildermyth on a Windows PC, first identify whether it fails to launch, crashes during play, stops responding, or causes a black screen. Then check OpenGL 3.2 support and graphics-driver selection, try the developer’s launch steps, validate Steam files, and send logs if the problem continues. These checks can narrow down the issue, but no single fix is established for every crash or freeze.

Identify the failure before changing settings

Note what you see and when it happens. Wildermyth may never open, run without displaying a window, crash to the desktop during play, or stop responding while Windows remains usable. A black screen while audio continues is a different symptom from a frozen game.

  • Record whether the problem occurs at launch, while loading a save, or at a repeatable point during gameplay.
  • For a black screen, note whether audio or other signs suggest the game is still running.
  • Write down when the issue began and any relevant changes to the PC or game setup.

These details help make a support report useful; the symptoms alone do not establish a specific cause. The developer’s technical-support guidance is at Worldwalker Games’ Steam support post.

Check Windows and graphics compatibility

Steam lists Wildermyth’s minimum Windows requirements as a 64-bit processor and operating system, Windows 7 or later, an i3 or better processor, 3 GB of RAM, OpenGL 3.2, and 2 GB of available storage. The same listing separately says the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024. The game’s displayed minimum OS and Steam’s client-support note are different requirements; check both for your setup. See the Wildermyth Steam listing.

Confirm OpenGL support and select the right GPU

Check whether your graphics hardware supports OpenGL 3.2. If your PC has integrated and dedicated graphics, make sure Wildermyth is using the dedicated GPU. Worldwalker Games lists graphics capability and GPU selection among its game-specific checks.

Update the graphics driver

Install a current graphics driver from the manufacturer of your graphics hardware. The developer recommends updating the graphics driver, but does not endorse a particular third-party updater or identify a universal driver-related cause.

If Wildermyth will not launch

Try the executable in the install folder

If launching through Steam does not open the game, try running Wildermyth’s Windows executable directly from its installation folder. The developer says this has helped some players, but it is not a guaranteed fix.

Validate Steam’s game files

For a Steam installation, validate the game files before considering a full reinstall. A developer reply in the “Game does not launch” Steam discussion recommends validation as an initial step.

Use the console option if there are no logs

If the game will not launch and produces no logs, a developer reply suggests adding --console to Wildermyth’s Steam launch options to gather more diagnostic detail. Treat this as a troubleshooting aid, not a fix.

Back up player data before reinstalling

If validation does not help and you decide to uninstall and reinstall, back up the players folder before removing game files. This precaution comes from the developer’s reply in the same Steam discussion.

If it crashes or freezes after launch

After a crash, relaunch Wildermyth and press F11 to open the Feedback tool. Select the option to send all logs, then describe what you were doing immediately before the crash. The developer’s technical-support post says the tool sends a screenshot, logs, and your message to the team. Include an email address if you want a reply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you cannot open the Feedback tool, look for the /logs directory in the game’s installation folder. Include the relevant logs when reporting the problem.

If the display goes black

For a black screen—especially if audio continues—try display-focused checks rather than assuming the game has frozen. In one Windows 11 support discussion, the developer suggested checking computer power settings and graphics drivers, considering whether the installation setup is unusual (such as using an external drive), and trying windowed mode or disabling game mode. The developer described some suggestions as guesses. The discussion documents a specific case; it does not establish a general Windows 11 defect or prove that any suggestion will resolve your issue. See the display-issue discussion.

What to include in a support report

Give the developer enough detail to distinguish your case from other launch and display problems. Include:

  • Whether the game never opens, crashes, freezes, or produces a black screen.
  • The exact step or gameplay action just before the failure, and whether it is repeatable.
  • Your Windows version, GPU model, graphics-driver version, and whether the PC has multiple graphics adapters.
  • The game version shown in the logs, if available.
  • Whether the game is installed on an external drive or another unusual setup.
  • The logs sent through F11 or found in the installation folder’s /logs directory.

Historical patch notes include fixes for particular game crashes and freezes, but a past fix does not show that your current problem has the same cause. The Wildermyth patch notes are useful for checking game history, not for diagnosing an individual PC.
