The U.S. CH-53 family includes Marine Corps heavy-lift helicopters, a Navy mine-countermeasures variant, and a now-historical Air Force special-operations line. The Marine versions progressed from the CH-53A and CH-53D to the CH-53E Super Stallion, which the CH-53K King Stallion is replacing. The Navy’s MH-53E Sea Dragon had a different specialty, while the Air Force MH-53H, MH-53J, and MH-53M Pave Low aircraft served in long-range rescue and special operations.
What is the CH-53 used for?
In U.S. service, the family’s best-known job is heavy lift: moving Marines, vehicles, equipment, and supplies, including between amphibious ships and shore. But the designation covers aircraft with distinct service-specific roles. The Navy adapted the helicopter for airborne mine countermeasures and shipboard cargo delivery; the Air Force’s Pave Low line was configured for long-range combat search and rescue and special operations.
The variants are not simply interchangeable models. Their service, equipment, and missions differ, and some are historical rather than current. The main U.S. variants are summarized below; this guide focuses on U.S. service versions, not every experimental or foreign derivative.

Which Marine Corps variants carried the Sea Stallion name?
CH-53A Sea Stallion
The CH-53A entered Marine Corps service in October 1964. It was an early heavy-lift helicopter used to move battlefield loads such as vehicles and artillery and to resupply remote outposts during the Vietnam era. The National Naval Aviation Museum’s Navy history describes one CH-53A configuration carrying 38 troops; that is a historical configuration figure, not a recommended load for other variants or conditions.

CH-53D Sea Stallion
The CH-53D improved high-altitude and hot-weather performance over the earlier model. Its folding main and tail rotors helped it operate from ships. The same Navy history gives a maximum troop-carrying figure of 55 for the D model, a historical maximum rather than a general mission-load recommendation. The Marine Corps retired the CH-53D in 2012, according to NAVAIR.
What did the CH-53E Super Stallion do?
The Marine Corps used the CH-53E for assault support and heavy logistics: transporting troops, equipment, and supplies from ship to shore and sustaining operations ashore. NAVAIR’s CH-53E fact page, last updated in 2021, states that the helicopter can operate from an amphibious warfare ship carrying 16 tons of cargo and deliver it 50 miles away. That is the fact sheet’s stated capability, not a guarantee that the payload and distance apply together in every operating condition.

The CH-53E is the legacy Marine heavy-lift platform as the service transitions to the CH-53K. Inventory figures should be treated cautiously: a U.S. Navy fact file updated in September 2021 listed 136 CH-53Es in operation, while an undated NAVAIR product page listed an inventory of 133. Because the latter page does not establish an as-of date and the figures are not aligned, neither should be presented as a current fleet count.
What is the difference between the CH-53E and CH-53K?
Both are Marine Corps heavy-lift helicopters intended to move people and heavy loads in support of amphibious operations. The CH-53K is the new-build successor, not a separate Navy or Air Force mission variant. Its planned payload figures also describe different measures: NAVAIR lists an intended 27,000-pound payload at a 110-nautical-mile mission radius under Navy high/hot conditions, as well as a 36,000-pound maximum external lift capability. Those figures should not be treated as the same load under the same range and conditions.

CH-53K transition and planned deployment
The Marine Corps declared initial operational capability for the CH-53K in April 2022. NAVAIR reported in November 2025 that the aircraft had entered full-rate production in November 2022. The 2026 Marine Aviation Plan says the first CH-53K Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) detachment is expected to change operational control in FY26, preparing for its first operational deployment in FY27. Those are planned milestones, not confirmation that the FY27 deployment has occurred.
The same 2026 plan sets a procurement objective of 200 CH-53Ks and an intended force structure of six active squadrons, one reserve squadron, one fleet replacement squadron, and test detachments. These are program objectives and plans, not a count of aircraft already delivered or operational.

Why does the Navy operate the MH-53E Sea Dragon?
The Navy’s MH-53E has a mission set distinct from Marine assault transport. NAVAIR identifies its primary missions as airborne mine countermeasures and Navy heavy lift, including vertical onboard delivery (VOD). VOD means delivering cargo to ships by helicopter. This specialization is why the Navy version carries the MH designation and should not be confused with the Marine Corps’ CH-53E Super Stallion.

What were the Air Force MH-53 Pave Low variants?
The Air Force Pave Low line was derived from the HH-53, which is related to the CH-53 family. It is a historical Air Force branch, not a current CH-53 heavy-lift role. The Air Force describes the aircraft’s origins in long-range combat search and rescue and its later adaptation for special operations.

MH-53H, MH-53J, and MH-53M
The Air Force account traces the Pave Low progression from the MH-53H to the MH-53J and then MH-53M. These aircraft conducted low-level, long-range missions, including infiltration, exfiltration, and rescue. The H, J, and M letters identify successive Pave Low versions; they do not indicate Marine Corps or Navy mission variants.
