You can create an audio excerpt without a background job by generating it when a user requests it, but Rails does not provide a built-in playable audio-clip generator through Active Storage. Put any on-demand processing behind a controller action—not in a view—and account for the request time and web-worker capacity it uses. If users only need to listen to the uploaded file, serve the original attachment instead.
Can Active Storage preview audio files?
Not as a playable excerpt, according to the documented Active Storage behavior. Its built-in previewers produce image representations of videos and PDFs. Audio analysis can record metadata such as duration and bit rate, but analyzing an audio file is different from cutting a shorter clip for playback. First decide what “preview” means for your interface. If the user can listen to the complete uploaded file, serve the original attachment. If the requirement is a shortened or transcoded asset, that is custom application behavior; do not assume that calling Active Storage’s preview method will produce it.

For a strict no-queue design, generate or retrieve the excerpt when the user requests it. Rails’ representation API recommends avoiding synchronous preview processing in views and instead linking to a controller action that processes on demand. A controller endpoint makes the work explicit and gives you a place to apply authorization, but it does not move the processing out of the HTTP request.

- Decide whether you need a derived clip. If not, serve the original attachment and skip media processing.
- Route playback through an endpoint when a clip is required. Have the endpoint check the user’s access and obtain or generate the excerpt. Rails documentation identifies a custom controller action as an option for on-demand processing and authenticated access; your application must define its own authorization rules.
- Use a media tool for the extraction. The Rails guides identify FFmpeg and ffprobe as external applications used in related Active Storage workflows. Rails does not install them, prescribe an audio-clipping command, or establish a codec profile for this custom feature. Install and configure the tool for your deployment, then validate the formats your implementation intends to accept. See the current Active Storage guide.
- Return the generated output for playback. Choose how the endpoint serves the result and whether the derived file should be retained. Those choices are part of your implementation, not an Active Storage guarantee.
Avoid running extraction while rendering a template: a page render can then inherit the media-processing delay, and the work is less clearly separated from ordinary view logic.
What does on-demand processing cost?
Without a queue, the request that triggers extraction waits for it to finish. That can increase time to first playback and keep a web worker occupied while the media tool runs. If several users request clips at once, those requests compete for application and processing capacity. Rails’ Active Job guide describes the purpose of background work as moving long-running or non-critical tasks out of the request-response cycle; using a queue is the conventional alternative when the work should not block a web request, but it does not meet a strict no-queue constraint. Repeated requests also raise a design choice: regenerate the same excerpt each time, or retain a derived result so it can be reused. Caching or persisting the output may reduce repeated computation, but the right approach depends on how the source file and preview settings can change. The Rails documentation cited here does not define a caching strategy for custom audio excerpts.

What Rails and FFmpeg versions should you check?
The current Rails guide specifies FFmpeg v3.4 or later for video previews and identifies ffprobe for video and audio analysis. The Rails 7.2 guide likewise describes FFmpeg for video previews and ffprobe for video/audio analysis, including audio duration and bit-rate metadata. These references do not establish a minimum FFmpeg version or a tested compatibility matrix for generating custom playable audio excerpts. Treat the video-preview requirement as limited to that documented use, and verify the tools and formats required by your own workflow.

FFmpeg and ffprobe are external applications, not software Rails installs for you. The documentation does not set guarantees for custom audio-preview codecs, maximum file size, processing speed, preview length, caching, or concurrent requests. Set and test those limits for the implementation and deployment you operate.
