To get a Finnish IP address while abroad, connect to a VPN server in Finland. Install a VPN app that offers Finland, sign in, select Finland, and connect. Then check your public IP to confirm its reported location is Finland; a separate DNS leak test can help check whether DNS requests follow the VPN connection too.
What you need to get a Finnish IP address
A public IP address is the internet-facing network address visible to websites and other internet services. A VPN app routes your connection through a VPN server; when that server is in Finland, websites generally see the server’s IP rather than the IP assigned to your local connection. Traficom explains how to check your public IP and notes that a router’s WAN address may not be public on some mobile broadband connections because of network address translation (NAT). Traficom’s home network and router security guidance covers the public-IP check; use its current page rather than assuming a router address is always the one websites see.
An IP address is different from a domain name. For example, a domain such as traficom.fi is a human-readable name that DNS translates to an IP address. An IP’s reported location is a network-location signal, not proof of your physical location, identity, or nationality. Traficom’s explanation of the .fi country code distinguishes IP addresses from domain names, while its Fi-root overview describes the role of DNS.

How to obtain a Finnish IP address

Choose a VPN with Finland available
Check the provider’s current country list and confirm Finland is selectable on the plan and app you intend to use. NordVPN and Proton VPN both document Finland locations and setup flows: see NordVPN’s Finland server page and Proton VPN’s guide to getting a Finnish IP address. These are provider descriptions, not independent performance tests or guarantees that a third-party site will accept the connection.

Check your public IP
With the VPN connected, use a reputable public-IP lookup and confirm that its country result is Finland. Traficom describes checking a public IP through router settings or a measurement service; on some mobile broadband connections, NAT means the router’s WAN address may differ from the public address websites see. For a second check, ExpressVPN’s support guidance recommends checking the IP and running a DNS leak test after connecting: ExpressVPN’s IP and DNS verification instructions.

If the IP check does not show Finland
- Confirm the VPN app still shows an active connection to Finland; reconnect if it has dropped.
- Try another Finland location if the app offers one, then repeat the public-IP lookup.
- Close and reopen the browser before checking again, so an existing session is less likely to confuse the result.
- Run a DNS leak test as a separate check. An IP lookup alone does not establish that DNS requests or all other traffic use the intended route.
These checks can help identify a routing or location mismatch, but they cannot guarantee that a website will accept the VPN connection.

What a Finnish IP does—and does not—change
A VPN changes the route your internet traffic takes and the IP address exposed by that route. It does not change your account’s registration country, payment details, device GPS setting, personal identity, or physical location. A website may combine IP information with account, device, payment, or other signals, and may apply its own terms. Access to a particular streaming, banking, government, or other region-restricted service is therefore service-dependent; check its current rules and expect that it may detect or block VPN connections.

How to choose a VPN for a Finnish IP
- Finland availability: Check that Finland is currently selectable on the plan and app you will use.
- Device support and setup: Confirm the provider has an app for your device and that its location picker lets you select Finland.
- Privacy and technical details: Read the provider’s current privacy policy and documentation for protocols, leak-protection settings, and any independent audits it publishes. Treat provider claims as claims, not guarantees.
- Price and terms: Compare current plan prices, renewal terms, refund conditions, and support directly with the provider; these details change.
- Compatibility with your intended service: Check the target service’s current rules and support guidance. A VPN provider’s Finland listing does not establish that a specific service will work.
