Yes—a projector can show a picture without a video cable when it and the source device support the same wireless display or casting method. You can use built-in Miracast, AirPlay, Chromecast/Google Cast, a projector maker’s app, or an HDMI receiver such as a wireless display adapter. The right option depends on the exact projector and source, and mirroring a screen does not always allow protected streaming video to play.
What “wireless projection” can mean
Wireless projection is not one universal feature. It can mean mirroring a phone or computer directly to a projector, casting a supported app over Wi-Fi, connecting through a projector maker’s app, or sending video to an HDMI receiver. These methods have different compatibility and network requirements.
- Screen mirroring: sends the device’s screen, including menus, photos, or a desktop. Miracast and AirPlay are common examples.
- App casting: asks a compatible app to play supported content on a compatible receiver, rather than mirroring everything on the phone. Chromecast/Google Cast is one example.
- Network projection: uses a projector maker’s app and may connect directly or through an existing wireless access point. Epson documents both direct and network-based modes (Epson).
- Wireless HDMI reception: an adapter or presentation receiver plugs into the projector’s HDMI input and receives a wireless signal from a compatible source.
Wireless video transport and internet access are separate questions. Some setups use a shared Wi-Fi network; some direct connections do not require devices to join a router. Streaming an online service still requires an internet connection somewhere in the playback path.
Which wireless method should you use?
| Method | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Miracast | Mirrors a compatible device’s display to a compatible projector or receiver. | Both endpoints must support Miracast. A Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter connects to HDMI and needs USB power; Windows users select it through the wireless-display connection controls (Microsoft Support; Epson Japan). |
| AirPlay | Shares or streams from a compatible Apple device to an AirPlay-capable projector or receiver. | Both endpoints need AirPlay support. Some setups, including the one documented by Philips, require the devices to be on the same Wi-Fi network (Philips manual). |
| Chromecast/Google Cast | Casts supported apps or content to a compatible projector or receiver; some devices also offer screen mirroring. | Confirm support on both devices and for the intended app. TCL says its smart projector can use Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot, and notes not every Android device supports Chromecast (TCL support). |
| Projector maker’s app | Sends a presentation or screen through the manufacturer’s software and network setup. | Check whether the projector uses a direct connection or a router-based network, and whether the app supports your source device. Epson documents both connection styles (Epson). |
| Wireless display adapter | Adds a wireless receiver to a projector with an available HDMI input. | Check source compatibility, HDMI availability, and the adapter’s power requirement. The Microsoft adapter uses HDMI plus USB power (Microsoft Support). |
| Wireless presentation system | Uses a dedicated transmitter and an HDMI receiver, often for meeting rooms. | Check supported devices, security, resolution, and the system’s stated range. Panasonic’s PressIT page gives product-specific specifications and warns that estimated distance varies with the network environment (Panasonic PressIT). |
Do not infer one protocol from another: a projector that supports Chromecast does not automatically support AirPlay or Miracast. Check the projector’s exact model documentation and the source device’s specifications before choosing a method.

How to connect a phone or computer wirelessly
- Identify the projector’s model and inputs. Look in its manual or support page for built-in wireless display features, supported protocols, and any required optional receiver.
- Match the source to the receiver. Confirm the phone, tablet, or computer supports the projector’s method. Miracast and AirPlay both require compatibility at both ends.
- Choose the appropriate connection mode. For network casting or an app, follow the maker’s instructions for joining the same Wi-Fi network. For a direct connection, follow the projector’s pairing instructions; do not assume a router is required.
- If using an HDMI adapter, connect and power it. Plug it into an available HDMI input and provide USB power as the adapter requires. Microsoft says its adapter can use a USB charging port or a suitable USB charger (Microsoft Support).
- Start projection from the source device. Open its screen-sharing or wireless-display controls, select the projector or receiver, and accept any pairing prompt shown on either screen. Exact menu names vary by device and operating system.
- Test the content you actually plan to show. A desktop or photo may display even when a streaming service blocks mirroring. For video, use the service’s supported cast control or playback app on a compatible projector or streaming receiver when available.
Can you watch Netflix or other streaming video?
Not necessarily. A successful connection can mirror menus, photos, and other content while a subscription video appears black or refuses to play because the service or device configuration restricts protected content. Philips identifies Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu as examples blocked by the mirroring method described in its manual; BenQ and Optoma also document protected-content or streaming-app limits for their respective configurations (Philips manual; BenQ support; Optoma support). Those examples are not a universal list of services blocked on every projector.
If video is the goal, try the streaming service’s own cast control rather than mirroring the whole screen, or use an app running on a compatible projector or HDMI streaming device. Check that the intended service and playback method are supported by the exact devices involved.

Why wireless projection may fail
The projector and source use different protocols
Wireless features are not interchangeable. Check the exact model specifications for the protocol on both ends, or use a receiver compatible with the source device.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The network arrangement is wrong
Some methods expect both devices on the same Wi-Fi network, while others can connect directly. Follow the projector or receiver’s instructions rather than assuming every setup uses the router. Internet access is needed for online playback, not necessarily for sending a locally stored screen or file.

Protected video is blocked
If the projector shows the source device’s menus but not a streaming video, the problem may be content protection rather than a failed wireless connection. Try an officially supported cast option or playback app.
The signal or performance is inadequate
Wireless performance depends on the equipment and network environment. Philips recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for better streaming performance in its own documentation; that recommendation is specific to its setup and is not a guarantee for every projector (Philips manual). Resolution, distance, and performance claims also vary by receiver and projector.

The adapter lacks an input or power source
An HDMI wireless adapter needs a free HDMI input and the power specified by its maker. Check both before troubleshooting pairing.
What to check before buying a wireless receiver
- Compatibility: verify the exact projector model, source device, and required protocol.
- Connection type: determine whether it needs shared Wi-Fi, a direct connection, a manufacturer app, or a dedicated transmitter.
- Video use: distinguish full-screen mirroring from app casting or playback directly on the receiver; confirm support for the service you intend to watch.
- Hardware needs: check HDMI input availability, USB or other power requirements, and whether the receiver is optional or model-specific.
- Performance limits: check resolution, supported image formats, network band, and stated distance in the product documentation. Treat range as an estimate when the manufacturer says it varies by environment.
For example, BenQ lists its EZC-5201BS as an optional accessory for selected projector models, with wireless output up to 1080p in 16:9; it is not a universal projector adapter (BenQ support). Panasonic describes a different, dedicated PressIT presentation system: its page specifies up to 30 m (98 ft) line-of-sight as an estimate that varies with the network environment, and lists 1080/60p for a single full-screen image or up to 4K/30p in four-way split-screen, with output dependent on the projector’s capability (Panasonic PressIT). These are product-specific figures, not general wireless-projector guarantees.
