The iPhone 18 Pro Max has a larger screen, a newer-generation chip, a revised main-camera feature, and a higher maximum storage option than the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple lists a U.S. starting price of $1,299 for the 18 Pro Max, but the exact price difference versus a 14 Pro Max cannot be stated without a current, comparable price for the older phone.

Apple introduced the iPhone 14 Pro Max in 2022 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max in 2026. The specifications below are from Apple; they do not establish independent performance or battery-test results.

What changes when you move from the 14 Pro Max to the 18 Pro Max?
Screen size and handling
The 18 Pro Max’s display is 0.2 inches larger diagonally. Its pixel dimensions are also higher, but both phones list the same pixel density of 460 ppi and the same maximum ProMotion refresh rate of 120Hz. The newer model is 9g heavier according to Apple’s specifications, so the larger screen comes with a modest weight increase.

Chip and everyday performance
The 18 Pro Max replaces the 14 Pro Max’s A16 Bionic with A20 Pro. That is a four-generation chip change, but Apple’s specifications alone do not show how much faster the newer phone feels in particular apps or workloads. No independent benchmark or controlled comparison is established here, so an upgrade percentage would be misleading.

Camera features
Apple lists the 14 Pro Max with a 48MP main camera and separate ultra-wide and telephoto options. For the 18 Pro Max, the cited announcement identifies a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. That documents a new main-camera feature, but it is not enough to conclude that every lens, zoom level, or photo will be better.
Storage choices
The 18 Pro Max starts at 256GB rather than 128GB and adds a 2TB capacity above the 14 Pro Max’s 1TB maximum. If your 14 Pro Max has sufficient free space, the higher ceiling may not matter; if you routinely run short on storage, the newer lineup offers more room at the top end.

Water resistance and durability
Apple lists both models as IP68-rated under IEC 60529 testing. Apple also cautions that water resistance is not permanent and can diminish through normal wear; liquid damage is not covered under warranty. An IP rating should not be treated as a guarantee against damage from immersion or spills.
How much more is the iPhone 18 Pro Max?
Apple announced a U.S. starting price of $1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The reviewed official sources do not establish a current U.S. retail or resale price for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, so there is no supportable current price difference to calculate. Comparing the 18 Pro Max’s launch price with the older phone’s 2022 launch price would not answer what it costs to switch now.

For a useful live comparison, match the country and storage capacity, and record the listing date, seller, device condition, and warranty. Compare new with new or used with used where possible. Keep trade-in and carrier credits separate from the device price: Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement describes U.S. Apple Trade In instant credits of $175–$885 for eligible iPhone 13 or later devices, and selected-carrier credits of up to $1,200 for an iPhone 14 or later in any condition. Eligibility and offer terms apply; these promotional credits are not a guaranteed resale value or cash price for a 14 Pro Max.
Compatibility and what comes in the box
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is eSIM-only and does not support a physical SIM, according to Apple Support. Check that your carrier supports eSIM activation before switching, particularly if you rely on a physical SIM today.

Apple says the 18 Pro Max box includes the phone and a 1-meter USB-C charging cable, but no power adapter or EarPods. You will need a compatible USB-C power adapter if you do not already have one.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max worth upgrading from the 14 Pro Max?
The specifications make the upgrade most compelling for someone who wants the larger display, needs more storage than the 14 Pro Max offers, or specifically values the 18 Pro Max’s variable-aperture main camera and newer chip generation. The evidence here does not quantify real-world speed or battery-life gains, so those should not be the deciding factors on their own.

If the 14 Pro Max still meets your needs, keeping it avoids an upgrade cost that cannot be calculated without a current price for your exact storage and condition. If you are shopping, compare the 18 Pro Max against current 14 Pro Max listings only after confirming condition, storage, seller, warranty, and the final cost after separately applying any eligible credits.
