There is no single best observability platform for every AI agent team. Start with the tools that fit your framework and deployment requirements, then compare what each one captures, how it supports evaluation, and what its usage meter counts. LangSmith is a natural first evaluation for teams using LangChain or LangGraph; Langfuse and Arize Phoenix suit teams prioritizing open or self-managed workflows; Datadog is compelling when agent telemetry needs to connect with existing Datadog operations data.

Which agent observability platform should I choose in 2026?

Use this shortlist as a set of conditional starting points, not a universal ranking. The comparison evidence available for these products includes vendor-authored material rather than independent benchmarks, so treat claims about relative fit as vendor perspectives and verify capabilities against your own stack.

  • Already building with LangChain or LangGraph: evaluate LangSmith first, while checking its support for your other frameworks and telemetry path.
  • Want an open platform you can self-host: evaluate Langfuse; account for the infrastructure and operations work that self-hosting adds.
  • Want self-managed tracing and experimentation: evaluate Arize Phoenix. Arize AX is the managed enterprise path in the same ecosystem.
  • Already rely on Datadog for production operations: evaluate Datadog Agent Observability for agent telemetry alongside broader application and infrastructure data.
  • Evaluation is your main workflow: include Braintrust in the shortlist; consider Helicone for a gateway-centered approach to request, session, usage, and cost visibility, or Fiddler for an enterprise focus spanning observability, governance, and model risk.

These are starting points, not exclusive use cases. Confirm current framework support, deployment options, data handling, and pricing directly with each vendor before making a commitment.

What should you compare in an agent observability tool?

Framework fit and instrumentation

Check whether the platform integrates directly with your agent framework, offers a native SDK, or accepts telemetry through OpenTelemetry or OpenInference. LangSmith has a close fit with LangChain and LangGraph, but is not limited to those frameworks. Langfuse documents native SDK and framework integrations as well as OpenTelemetry and gateway routes. Phoenix is built on OpenTelemetry and OpenInference.

Standards can make instrumentation more portable, but they do not guarantee that your framework emits every field or nested operation you need. Ask for a demonstration using your actual stack, including model calls, retrieval, tool calls, retries, and sessions.

Trace completeness and debugging

An agent run may involve a model call, retrieval, one or more tools, sub-agents, retries, and evaluator calls. Make sure a trace shows the sequence and nesting of these operations, their latency, and—where supported—cost. Test whether an engineer can move from a failed or low-quality run to the specific operation and input that needs attention.

Langfuse documents tracing for LLM and non-LLM calls such as retrieval, embeddings, and APIs, along with multi-turn sessions and agent graph views. For any platform, verify the same level of detail with real traffic rather than relying on a basic “trace supported” claim.

Evaluation and regression workflow

Observability is more useful when teams can turn production examples into repeatable quality checks. Compare whether a tool supports datasets, experiments, offline and online evaluation, human review, and regression testing. LangChain’s guide to LangSmith emphasizes production traces, evaluation datasets, human review, and converting production failures into repeatable test coverage. Phoenix documents evaluation tests, prompt iteration using production examples, and experiments that compare changes on the same inputs.

Deployment and data control

Distinguish managed SaaS from self-hosted or self-managed deployments, and ask which options are available for the specific edition you would buy. Langfuse offers a self-hosting path, which gives a team more control but also makes it responsible for operating the infrastructure. Phoenix is the self-managed, open-source option in Arize’s ecosystem; Arize AX is its managed enterprise platform. Datadog Agent Observability is described as SaaS, not self-hosted, in the comparison used here.

Before choosing, establish where traces and evaluation data are stored, who can access them, what retention applies, and what deployment options are included in the relevant plan. Those terms can vary by edition and change over time.

How do the leading candidates differ?

LangSmith: a close fit for LangChain and LangGraph teams

LangSmith is a sensible first evaluation when LangChain or LangGraph is central to your application. Its tracing and execution views are closely aligned with that ecosystem, and the comparison also describes support for applications built with other frameworks and OpenTelemetry instrumentation. Assess its trace coverage and evaluation workflow using your own mix of frameworks rather than assuming that a LangChain fit answers every integration question.

Langfuse: an open, self-hostable engineering workflow

Langfuse brings together tracing, sessions, agent graph views, prompt workflows, evaluation, datasets, and experiments. Its documented tracing covers both model and non-model work, and it offers multiple ways to send telemetry. Choose it when that combination and the self-hosting option fit your requirements; include the cost of maintaining the deployment in your decision.

Arize Phoenix and Arize AX: separate the self-managed and managed paths

Phoenix supports tracing, evaluation tests, prompt iteration, datasets, and experiments, with OpenTelemetry and OpenInference as its foundation. It is the self-managed option; AX is the managed enterprise platform. Evaluate the deployment path you would actually use rather than treating the two as interchangeable editions of one product.

Datadog Agent Observability: connect agent traces to Datadog operations

Datadog is most relevant when your team already uses its APM and operations data and wants agent traces correlated with application, infrastructure, and user-experience telemetry. Its SaaS deployment and LLM-span billing model make both deployment requirements and trace volume important parts of the evaluation.

Other candidates: Braintrust, Helicone, and Fiddler

Braintrust is presented as evaluation-first. Helicone is presented around request, session, usage, and cost visibility with a gateway-centered workflow. Fiddler is an enterprise candidate spanning agent observability, governance, and model risk. These descriptions come from vendor comparisons, not independent benchmarks, so use them to decide what to test rather than as proof of objective superiority.

How should you compare pricing?

Do not compare headline prices until you know what each vendor counts. A vendor-authored comparison updated August 10, 2026, says its plan details were checked against vendor-published pages on August 7, 2026. It identifies the following billing meters; tiers and included volumes can change, so confirm the terms for the plan and region you would use.

Langfuse Traces, observations, and scores as units How many observations and scores your typical run creates, not just the number of user requests.
Braintrust Processed data and scores Data processed and the evaluation scores generated by your workflow.
Datadog Agent Observability LLM spans; evaluator model calls count as spans Model and evaluator calls, plus the spans generated by your agent workflow.
Arize AX Spans and ingested data Both span counts and the volume of data ingested.
Helicone Not stated in the August 2026 comparison Confirm the current plan’s billing unit directly with the vendor.
Fiddler Not stated in the August 2026 comparison Confirm the current plan’s billing unit directly with the vendor.

A single request can fan out into model calls, retrieval, tools, sub-agents, retries, and evaluators. That fan-out affects different meters differently, so a synthetic cost-per-million comparison can mislead. Estimate usage from a sample of your own traffic, including evaluation activity, then verify current plan terms and retention with the vendor.

How can you run a useful evaluation?

  1. Choose representative workflows. Include ordinary runs and difficult cases: multi-step tool use, retrieval, retries, failures, and multi-turn sessions where applicable.
  2. Instrument the actual application. Use the framework integration, SDK, or telemetry route you expect to run in production. Check that nested operations, inputs, outputs, timing, and errors appear as required.
  3. Follow a failure through to a fix. Ask an engineer to inspect a problematic run and identify the model call, retrieval result, tool action, or retry that needs changing.
  4. Test the quality loop. Use production examples to build a dataset or evaluation set, compare a change on the same inputs, and check how human review and regression coverage fit your team’s process.
  5. Estimate real usage and operational effort. Apply the vendor’s billing meter to the captured traffic sample, then account for deployment work, retention, and the people who must maintain the platform.
  6. Confirm portability and data requirements. Check which fields your current framework emits, how you can export or route telemetry, and whether the deployment and retention terms meet your requirements.

OpenTelemetry’s Generative AI semantic conventions provide a standards-based place to look for common telemetry attributes. They do not by themselves ensure that a particular agent framework or integration captures every operation your team needs; verify coverage in the pilot.
