On supported Samsung Galaxy phones, turn on the warmer-screen setting in Settings > Display > Eye comfort shield, or tap its tile in Quick Settings. Older software may call it Blue light filter. The available name and controls depend on your model, region, and software version. You can adjust the schedule and screen warmth, but treat the feature as a display-comfort preference—not a proven treatment for eye strain or a guaranteed way to sleep better.
What Samsung’s Blue light filter and Eye comfort shield do
Both names refer to a display setting that warms the screen’s colors to limit blue light. When it is on, the screen may look slightly yellow; the tint can change over time on supported devices.
Samsung’s support guidance describes Eye comfort shield for devices running One UI 3.1 or later and the older Blue light filter for One UI 2.5, One UI 3, or earlier. Those version references are guidance, not a guarantee: availability and menus can vary by model and regional software. Samsung also notes Eye comfort shield may not be available on every phone model. See Samsung Canada’s feature guidance and Samsung US support.

Turn the setting on or find it in Quick Settings
- Open Settings > Display > Eye comfort shield on a supported newer device.
- Turn on Eye comfort shield and choose a mode, if prompted.
- Alternatively, swipe down to open Quick Settings and tap the Eye comfort shield tile. If you do not see it, edit Quick Settings to add the tile.
On older software, look for Blue light filter under Display or in Quick Settings. Touch and hold its tile to reach controls such as opacity and scheduling. Menu labels and screens may differ from these paths.

Choose Adaptive or Custom on Eye comfort shield
Supported devices offer two ways to control the screen tone. Samsung’s Canada support page, last updated September 16, 2024, describes the choice as: “You can select Adaptive to change the screen’s colors based on the time of day, or Custom to choose a schedule and color temperature that is right for you.”
| Mode | What it does | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptive | Changes screen colors according to time of day. | You want the phone to adjust automatically without choosing a time range. |
| Custom | Lets you choose when the setting is active and adjust color temperature. | You want a consistent time window or a specific level of warmth. |
Set a Custom schedule
- Open Settings > Display > Eye comfort shield.
- Select Custom.
- Choose Always on, Sunset to sunrise, or Custom to set your own start and stop times.
- Adjust the color-temperature slider to change how warm the display looks.
Samsung says Sunset to sunrise uses the phone’s location to determine local sunset and sunrise. If location access or the schedule is not suitable, choose a custom time range instead. Samsung documents the controls, but does not identify one ideal schedule or warmth level for everyone.

How older Blue light filter controls differ
Older Blue light filter menus may provide an opacity slider and scheduled activation rather than the Adaptive and Custom choices found on supported Eye comfort shield devices. Touch and hold the Quick Settings tile to look for these controls. If the label or options are missing, the phone’s model and software version may not support the same feature set.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEye comfort shield, Dark mode, and Extra dim are different
- Eye comfort shield warms screen colors.
- Dark mode changes the appearance of menus, settings, and preloaded Samsung apps; third-party apps may not follow it.
- Extra dim lowers screen brightness.
Dark mode and Extra dim can be useful in dim surroundings, but neither is the same control as changing the screen’s color temperature. Because warmth changes how colors appear, consider adjusting or temporarily turning it off for color-sensitive work. Samsung’s guidance describes the available controls but does not provide a color-accuracy measurement.

What the evidence says about eye strain and sleep
Samsung presents the setting as a way to limit blue light and help with eye fatigue. That does not establish that the built-in filter prevents eye damage, treats eye strain, or reliably improves sleep.
A 2023 Cochrane review examined blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses, not Samsung’s phone setting. It included 17 randomized trials with 619 participants and concluded the lenses may not reduce short-term eye strain from computer use compared with non-filtering lenses. For sleep, six trials involved 148 participants: three reported improvement and three found no significant difference. The review searched for studies through March 22, 2022. These findings cannot directly establish the effect of a software filter on a phone display. Read the Cochrane review.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology says small amounts of blue light from screens have not been shown to harm eyes and links digital discomfort more closely to device misuse or overuse than to blue light. Its practical advice includes reducing evening screen exposure and using night or dark mode. That is guidance on screen habits, not proof that Eye comfort shield prevents retinal damage or relieves eye strain. See the AAO’s blue-light and digital eye strain guidance.
