To breathe underwater in Minecraft, use a Water Breathing potion or turtle shell for a temporary effect, extend your air supply with a Respiration helmet, or create a refuge with a bubble column, conduit, or air pocket. The right choice depends on your resources and whether you play Java or Bedrock—air-pocket tricks in particular do not work the same way in both editions.
Choose a method for your dive

Use equipment for a temporary extension
Respiration helmet
Respiration extends the time you can stay underwater before needing air. It is useful when you already have an enchanted helmet, but it does not remove the need to surface or find an air source. Minecraft Help describes Respiration as extending underwater breathing time: Minecraft Help: Minecraft Game Features.
Turtle shell
Wear a turtle shell in the helmet slot to gain a short water-breathing effect. Its timer begins when you submerge, so it is a limited buffer rather than protection for an entire expedition. Minecraft describes turtle shells as wearable items that “let players breathe a little longer underwater”: Minecraft: Taking Inventory: Turtle Shell.
Water Breathing potion
A potion is another temporary option for a planned dive. The available sources do not establish its current recipe, duration, or edition-specific details, so check the in-game brewing information for your version rather than relying on an assumed duration.

Make a breathing refuge with a bubble column
Bubble columns let players breathe inside them, making one a reusable local air-refill point. Place magma blocks to create a downward-pulling column or soul sand to create an upward-pushing one. The downward current from magma can pull you lower, so approach it carefully and avoid getting trapped beneath it.
The broad mechanics appear in the official Java 1.13 and Bedrock 1.5.0 release notes. Those are historical notes, so use them for the column directions and breathing behavior—not as confirmation of current range or other version-specific details: Minecraft Java 1.13 release notes and Minecraft Bedrock 1.5.0 release notes.

Build a conduit for a longer-term solution
A conduit gives Conduit Power and is suited to a built underwater base or a project where you want a more persistent source of underwater support. The official Java 1.13 notes list its recipe as one heart of the sea and nine nautilus shells. The cited Bedrock 1.5.0 notes confirm that conduits give Conduit Power, but exact current activation conditions and range are not established here. Check the current recipe and requirements for your edition before gathering materials.

Some blocks can displace water and leave a pocket of air, but Java and Bedrock do not treat waterlogged blocks identically. A door-based trick should therefore not be presented as a universal solution. The community-maintained Minecraft Wiki tutorial discusses the distinction and can help you identify the right approach for your edition: Minecraft Wiki: Underwater home tutorial. If the pocket fills with water in your world, use a bubble column or another breathing method instead.

Pick the practical option
- For a quick dive, use a turtle shell or a Water Breathing potion; remember that these are temporary.
- If you already have enchanted armor, Respiration gives you more time without building anything.
- For a repeatable refill point, use a bubble column and account for the direction of its current.
- For an underwater base, consider a conduit and verify the current edition’s setup requirements.
- For a quick air pocket, use instructions specific to Java or Bedrock rather than assuming a door works in both.
