There is no universally best keyboard size. Choose by the keys you use, the space available on your desk, and how comfortable you are accessing missing keys through an Fn layer. If you regularly enter numbers, keep a numpad; if you want a narrower board, consider tenkeyless (TKL), 75%, or smaller layouts. Then choose a switch by its feel and sound—not by color alone.
What keyboard size should you buy?
Keyboard size labels describe the key groups a board keeps, not a strict standard for its dimensions. A full-size keyboard typically has 104–108 keys, while a TKL typically has about 87. Counts and layouts vary, so use the manufacturer’s key diagram to confirm what a particular model includes. RTINGS explains the conventions and their limits.

Approximate counts from OSHID are 104–108 for full-size, 87–88 for TKL, 82–84 for 75%, 66–68 for 65%, and about 61 for 60%. ISO and JIS layouts can change the count. These are layout descriptions, not guarantees: check OSHID’s layout guide and the individual keyboard’s diagram before buying.
Start with the numpad
If you frequently enter figures, a full-size or 96% board is the straightforward choice. A 96% layout retains nearly all full-size keys by reducing gaps between groups; that saves space, but can make the numpad and navigation cluster less distinct by touch. TKL removes the numpad, so it is a better fit when you rarely use one and want more desk room.

Decide which keys can move to a layer
A 75% layout compresses much of TKL functionality while usually keeping a function row and arrows. A 65% commonly keeps arrows but moves function-row access to an Fn layer. A 60% typically layers access to arrows, function keys, and navigation keys. The precise right-side keys differ between models; check the layout rather than relying on the percentage label. How to compare keyboards before choosing
Compare the actual layout and dimensions of the models you are considering, especially when moving from a familiar full-size board to a compact one.

- Whether it has a dedicated numpad.
- Whether arrow, function, and navigation/editing keys are dedicated or accessed through an Fn layer.
- Board width and the desk space left for your mouse.
- Spacing between key groups and the placement of less familiar keys.
- Physical layout standard and compatible keycap sizes.
- Which keys are assigned to layers and whether those shortcuts suit your routine.
A manufacturer brochure offers one concrete, dated example: the CHERRY MX BOARD 1.0 TKL is described as a wired mechanical keyboard with 87 keys, a red linear switch rated at 45 cN, approximate dimensions of 370 × 150 × 25 mm, and a three-year limited manufacturer guarantee. Those specifications appear in a brochure dated 2020-05-15; they do not establish current stock, price, or present-day product standing. Read the CHERRY brochure.
ANSI, ISO, and JIS are physical layouts, not sizes
A keyboard’s size category tells you which key groups it retains. ANSI, ISO, and JIS describe physical key shapes and placements, so two boards in the same size category can still have different layouts and keycap requirements.

- ANSI has a wide horizontal Enter key and a long left Shift.
- ISO has a tall, L-shaped Enter key, a shorter left Shift, and an additional key.
- JIS adds several keys around the spacebar.
These differences can affect whether a keycap set fits: check for the correct Enter and left Shift sizes, bottom-row modifier widths, and, for JIS, spacebar-row keys. A generic keycap set will not necessarily fit every keyboard. The OSHID layout guide describes these physical distinctions. The public ISO/IEC 9995-1 page says the standard identifies keyboard sections and specifies their general shape and relative placement; its full text requires purchase.
Physical layout and the language or logical mapping used by a computer are also separate matters. Confirm both the key shapes you need and the mapping you intend to use.

How to choose between linear, tactile, and clicky switches
Switch labels describe a mechanism’s feel and sound, not a guaranteed improvement in typing speed, gaming, or ergonomics. CHERRY’s product descriptions provide familiar examples: MX Red is linear without a click, MX Brown is tactile without a click, and MX Blue is tactile with an audible click. Color names are not universal specifications across manufacturers.

These are descriptions of CHERRY products, not rules about every switch sold under a similar color name. CHERRY’s MX 2.0S page describes its MX Brown as tactile without a click. When comparing specific switches, check the manufacturer’s information for feel, sound, actuation force, and travel rather than inferring those properties from color.

Try the feel if you are unsure
If you cannot tell which mechanism you prefer from descriptions, a physical sample can help. CHERRY’s MX Experience Box contains ten switch variants covering linear, tactile, clicky, and silent characteristics. It is a sample of those switches, not evidence that they are compatible with every keyboard.
Also check whether the keyboard allows switch replacement before choosing based on a switch you might want to try later. Compatibility and replacement options depend on the individual board.
