To change what your Windows 11 laptop does when you close its lid, open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do. In the When I close the lid row, choose an action separately for On battery and Plugged in, then select Save changes.
Change the lid-close action in Control Panel
- Select Search on the taskbar, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select System and Security.
- Under Power Options, select Choose what the power buttons do.
- If the options are locked, select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- In the When I close the lid row, choose the action you want under On battery. Choose an action under Plugged in separately if you want a different behavior while connected to power.
- Select Save changes.
Microsoft also documents a Settings route: Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings, then select Choose what closing the lid does. Windows documentation may label the Power & sleep area differently across versions; the Control Panel route above is the clearest documented path.
Choose the right action for each power source
| Action | When it fits | What to know |

| Sleep | Short breaks when you want to return to your session quickly. | Microsoft describes Sleep as using very little power and resuming faster than Hibernate. |
| Hibernate | A longer time away, especially when charging is unavailable. | It uses less power than Sleep but resumes more slowly. The option may not be available on every PC, including some devices with InstantGo. |
| Do nothing | You want the laptop to remain active after you close the lid. | Consider battery drain, heat, ventilation, and your laptop maker’s guidance. A closed laptop is not necessarily safe for demanding workloads in every setup. |
The available choices depend on the PC. Set the battery and plugged-in columns according to how you actually use the laptop; selecting an action in one column does not set the other.

Understand the difference between lid settings and idle timeouts
The lid-close action applies when you close the lid. Screen-off and automatic-sleep timers apply when the device is inactive, and they are configured separately at Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.

Microsoft publishes adjusted timeout defaults that vary by device type. For modern standby devices, both screen-off and sleep defaults are 3 minutes on battery and 5 minutes when plugged in. For S3 devices, screen-off defaults are 3 minutes on battery and 5 minutes plugged in; sleep defaults are 10 minutes on battery and 15 minutes plugged in. These are Microsoft-published defaults, not lid-close settings or recommendations for every user; the page does not state a publication year.
Troubleshoot missing settings or unexpected behavior
- Options are locked: On the Power Options page, select Change settings that are currently unavailable, make the change, and save it.
- Hibernate is missing: Hibernate is not available on every PC. Microsoft notes that some devices, including PCs with InstantGo, may not offer it.
- The laptop does not wake as expected: Most PCs resume with the power button, but some may wake through a keyboard key, mouse click, or opening the lid. Check your laptop maker’s documentation for model-specific behavior.
- A connected peripheral stops working after wake: Disconnect and reconnect it or restart the PC, and check that its drivers are current.
- The PC sleeps at the wrong time: Check the separate timeout controls under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
