A test can pass and still miss the behavior you care about. In a first-person account of building Pixbu, developer @dedemavci describes five cases where a proxy, stale expectation, incomplete check, or misleading environment made a result look more conclusive than it was. The practical lesson is to ask what each check actually measures—and what it cannot establish.
1. Stale sprite metadata hid a creature that was shrinking
Pixbu is described as a self-care app in which a pixel creature grows as the user looks after themselves. The intended visual progression seemed protected by a test, but the guard read expected sprite sizes from metadata that had not been remeasured after the art changed.
@dedemavci reported these pixel counts for the creature’s stages: baby, 6,572; teen, 5,627; adult, 5,840; elder, 6,244; and mythic, 6,338. In the author’s account, the first evolution therefore shrank by 14% instead of growing. These are project-reported measurements, not an independent image audit. Read the account on HackerNoon.

The failure was not that the test returned the wrong result for the data it read. It checked stale expectations rather than whether the changed artwork had the intended visible property. When a test depends on metadata derived from an artifact, update or independently verify that metadata after the artifact changes.

- 【STAINLESS STEEL MATERIAL】The vernier caliper is made of high-strength stainless steel and is waterproof and dirt-proof. The service life of this stainless steel digital caliper is longer than that of calipers with plastic or carbon fiber parts.
- 【ACCURATE MEASUREMENT AND ZERO SETTING】This digital caliper glides smoothly. Measuring range: 0 -6" / 0-150mm; Accuracy: ± 0.001"/ 0.02mm; Resolution: 0. 0005"/0. 01mm. At the same time, the smart design allows you to easily reset to zero by pressing a button and start a new measurement at any point on the scale, which is very suitable for differential measurement.
- 【4 MEASUREMENT MODES】The digital caliper has 4 measurement modes, which can be used to measure inside and outside diameter, depth, and step with two sets of jaws and a probe. Multiple measurement modes can bring more usage scenarios to people, and the measurement process is also very convenient.
- 【UNIT CONVERSION & LARGER LCD SCREEN】These Digital Calipers have a one-key button to quickly switch from inches (inch), fractions (F), millimeters (mm). The 6" digital caliper has a large, easy-to-read LCD DISPLAY which is easy to use and read even under strong sunlight. It will automatically turn off after 5 minutes of non-use to save power.
- 【Wide Applications】 Compared to the ordinary rulers, this stainless steel caliper can measure not only length but also caliber and depth, allows you to measure circular and cylindrical objects, more functions and better performance will satisfy you. It has always been used by professionals and hobbyists alike, jewelers, hobbyists, woodworkers, machinists, DIY, automotive mechanics, and more.
2. A bounding box measured ears, not the skull
Cosmetics needed to align with the creature’s head. The overall head bounding box varied by only about ±1 px, according to @dedemavci, which suggested little change between frames. But the ears determined the tallest extent. The box was answering a question about the whole silhouette, not locating the skull.
The author instead counted filled pixels by row. The account reports a narrow row with 8 pixels at ear height and a broader skull row with 73 pixels, then says the approach corrected cosmetic placement across 514 frames. The Devpost project page also describes the sprite-anchor and cosmetic-fit problem. See the Pixbu project on Devpost.

- [INCH/MM Conversion]: One button can quickly convert two measuring unit (INCH/MM). Measuring Range:0 - 150mm (6") / Resolution: 0.01mm (0.0005")/Accuracy: ±0.02mm (0.001")
- [Stainless Steel Material]: The vernier caliper is made of high-strength stainless steel, which is waterproof, stain-proof and oil-proof. The ergonomic design brings you a comfortable feeling.
- [Large and Clear Display Screen]: Large LCD display gives you a clear reading. The thumb rolling and locking screw provide easy sliding, accurate positioning, and fine adjustment.
- [Multifunctional Use]: The digital micrometer can easily and accurately measure internal, external, height and depth dimensions.
- [Automatically shut off]: When you have no action on the dial caliper, it can automatically shut off after 4 minutes.
A null or near-constant result does not prove that the target feature is constant; it may mean the chosen measurement is dominated by something else. Define the feature you need to locate—in this case, the skull—and choose a measurement that isolates it rather than relying on the outer boundary of the entire image.

A test meant to ensure that a critical function ran stayed green even after the call was wrapped in if (false). The author concluded that the check searched for the call’s text in the source file rather than verifying that execution reached it. Seeing a function name in code is not the same as proving that the function ran under the relevant conditions.

@dedemavci also reports that two attempted mutation edits did not reach the file because line endings kept the patch from matching. The tests therefore ran against unchanged source. This makes mutation testing useful only when the mutation itself is confirmed: if the source did not change, a passing test says nothing about whether it would catch the altered behavior.
- Make a small, meaningful change that should break the behavior the test protects.
- Inspect the changed file or diff to confirm the mutation actually applied.
- Run the test and check that it fails for the expected reason.
- Restore the original behavior and verify the test passes again.
A test that fails when a meaningful behavior is broken provides stronger evidence than one that merely finds expected text. The test still covers only the behavior and conditions exercised by that mutation.

4. One failed lookup became an impossibility claim
In one example, the author initially checked a store page’s status but not its content, then found version, update-date, and release-note signals in the page itself. In another, a single network timeout led to the assumption that a remote was unreachable; @dedemavci says ten later connections succeeded. These anecdotes do not establish how every store page or network behaves. They show why the scope of a claim should match the observation behind it.
When a lookup fails, distinguish among “this command returned no result,” “this attempt timed out,” and “the capability is unavailable.” The first two describe what was observed; the third is a broader conclusion that needs more evidence. Record the command or method, date, and output so someone can understand exactly what the check established.

5. Sandbox dashboard figures looked like business results
@dedemavci reports that a dashboard showed $1,573 in revenue and 136 customers while its “Sandbox data” toggle was on. The same account says actual revenue was $0 and installs were 22. The dashboard itself has not been independently inspected, so these figures should be read as the author’s report, with the sandbox context attached to the first pair.
Environment labels are part of a measurement, not incidental interface details. A number from a sandbox cannot be treated as a production result. Before sharing a dashboard figure, confirm which environment or data mode is selected and label the number with that context.
How to tell whether a test measures the thing you care about
@dedemavci’s account includes a project-reported total of 1,889 automated tests, but a high test count does not show whether each test targets the right property. A useful review starts with the claim a test is supposed to support and works backward to the evidence it actually reads.

- Inspect the proxy. Determine whether the check reads the changed artifact, a derived value, source text, a single response, or data from a particular environment.
- Try a counterexample. Change the behavior in a way that should violate the claim and see whether the check detects it.
- Verify the test setup. Confirm edits were applied, the intended code path ran, and the selected environment matches the claim.
- Keep the conclusion narrow. Report the method, date, and observed output instead of turning one measurement into a universal statement.
These are lessons from one developer’s reported experience with Pixbu, not a population-level study of software testing. The author’s summary captures the distinction: “The test wasn’t lying. It was answering a different question than the one I thought I’d asked.”
