To free up space safely on a MacBook Air, first check which storage categories are full, then remove or move only files you recognize and no longer need. Empty the Bin after reviewing it: files in the Bin still use storage until it is emptied. Avoid trying to delete “System Data” as if it were one junk folder; macOS manages that changing category.

How do I delete junk files on my MacBook Air?

Start with macOS’s Storage view rather than a third-party cleaner. It shows which categories are taking up space and, where available, lets you inspect eligible items before removing them.

1. Check what is using storage

  1. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.

  2. On earlier macOS versions, choose Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage.

2. Review files you recognize

Look for items that are genuinely no longer needed, such as old files in Downloads, large videos, unused apps, or device backups you can confidently do without. Check the file or app before deleting it; deletion is not a substitute for a backup, and not every removed item will be recoverable.

Some content can be removed from the Mac without deleting the purchase itself. Storage settings may offer removal of eligible TV, Music, Books, or Podcasts downloads, which can then be downloaded again. In Mail, Apple also identifies Erase Junk Mail and Erase Deleted Items as ways to clear those folders. Review their contents before using those commands.

3. Empty the Bin only after checking it

Moving a file to the Bin does not reclaim its space. Apple explains that the storage becomes available only after the Bin is emptied. Open the Bin, confirm that nothing there needs to be restored, and then empty it. macOS can also be set to automatically remove Bin items older than 30 days; this is an optional cleanup setting, not a reason to skip checking what is in the Bin.

See Apple’s storage cleanup guidance and Optimize storage space on your Mac for the documented options.

How do I free up space on my Mac?

Choose the approach that fits what you want to keep. Deleting files is direct, but removes content you may later want; optimization can keep supported content available on demand; external storage preserves files on a separate device but requires a safe transfer and a place to keep the drive.

Option What happens Main trade-off
Delete unwanted files Removes selected local content; space is reclaimed after the Bin is emptied. Make sure you do not need the files and have a backup when appropriate.
Use iCloud or Optimize Storage Eligible content can be stored in iCloud or optimized locally; some items may download when you need them. iCloud uses your iCloud plan, which is separate from the Mac’s internal storage.
Move files to external storage Keeps files on a separate physical drive instead of the Mac’s internal storage. You need the drive, and should verify the copied files before removing originals.

Use Apple’s built-in optimization options

Apple’s storage recommendations include storing eligible Desktop and Documents files, Photos content, and Messages attachments in iCloud, as well as optimizing Apple TV downloads and Mail attachments. Depending on the option and content, a local copy may be removed or an item may need to download when opened. iCloud storage is not additional internal Mac storage: it uses the capacity available under your iCloud plan.

For a large photo or video library you want to retain, Apple also suggests moving files to another storage device. Copy the files first, verify that the copy opens and contains what you expect, and only then consider removing the originals from the Mac. If choosing a drive, check that its connector works with your MacBook Air’s ports and that its format suits your intended use. Apple’s storage guide describes the external-storage option; it does not specify a particular drive model.

Use Safe Mode only for a temporary need

If you need space temporarily—for example, to complete an update—Apple notes that starting in Safe Mode may clear certain caches, which macOS can recreate automatically. This is not a guaranteed way to recover a particular amount of storage or a lasting substitute for reviewing personal files.

What is System Data on Mac?

System Data is a broad category for system-managed items, not a single folder of disposable files. Apple says it can include logs, caches, virtual-memory files, temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. Its size and contents can change with the Mac’s state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage settings do not provide a direct way to select and delete System Data as a category. Apple says its contents are managed by macOS. Avoid deleting unfamiliar files from system or Library folders to force the displayed number down; instead, manage your own files in Finder or remove content through the app that created it. macOS may clear caches it considers safe when storage is needed. Apple’s Find and delete files on your Mac guide explains the category.

Why didn’t moving files to the Bin free up space?

Because the Bin is a holding place, not a final deletion. The files continue to occupy storage until you empty it. Review the Bin first, restore anything you want to keep, and empty it only when you are sure. If storage still appears tight afterward, return to Storage settings and inspect the category details rather than deleting system files based on their names.
