To pull HDMI through a wall, choose a cable marked for in-wall use that suits the route, inspect the cavity for wiring and other obstructions, then guide the cable with a pull string, fish tape, or rods. Pull steadily, protect the connector, leave slack at both ends, and test picture and sound before finishing the openings. Keep HDMI routing separate from mains power: never run an ordinary TV power cord through a wall.
Before you start: plan the route and check the wall
Decide where the cable will enter and exit, and whether the route will pass through an open wall cavity or existing conduit. Choose a path you can reach and inspect. Before cutting or fishing, check for electrical wiring, plumbing, heating ducts, insulation, and other obstructions. An installation guide recommends checking these hazards before making openings (Engineer Fix).
If you cannot tell what is behind the wall, or the construction makes a safe route uncertain, stop and get qualified help rather than cutting or pushing a tool blindly. Wall type, local rules, and whether a route enters an air-handling space can affect what is permitted.

For a concealed run, use an HDMI cable marked for in-wall installation and appropriate to the wall route and local requirements. Do not assume an ordinary device cable is suitable simply because it works outside a wall. The cable’s in-wall jacket marking, the cable technology, and its supported HDMI signal and run length are separate considerations; verify each for your setup.

In US installations, one vendor explainer describes CL2 and CL3 as in-wall fire-safety ratings, gives their voltage classes as 150 V and 300 V respectively, and identifies CMP for plenum or air-handling spaces. These are not picture-quality ratings, and vendor guidance does not replace the product listing or applicable local code. Check the cable’s markings and the rules that apply to your route (Tono Systems’ CL2 and CL3 explainer).
As a product-specific example, StarTech specifies its 5 m CL3 HDMI cable for up to 4K x 2K at 30 Hz. Those figures describe that cable only, not every CL3 cable (StarTech product specifications). Do not rely on a universal length chart: the sources do not establish one. Check the requirements of your devices and the specifications of the particular cable, especially for a long run.

What you may need
- In-wall-rated HDMI cable: Choose one suited to the route, length, and signal you need.
- Pull string: Use one already in conduit, if available, or leave one in place for future cable changes.
- Fish tape or fiberglass rods: These can help guide the line through a wall cavity when a pull string is unavailable or the route needs more control.
- Conduit, if appropriate: It can protect the cable and make replacement easier, but its opening must accommodate the HDMI connector unless the cable has a detachable head.
You do not necessarily need every item. The route, clearance, and connector size determine which pulling aid is useful.

How to pull HDMI through the wall
- Plan the endpoints and inspect the path. Mark the entry and exit locations and confirm the route as far as possible before making openings. Check for wiring, plumbing, ducts, insulation, and obstructions.
- Choose the cable and pulling method. Match the in-wall marking to the installation and select a cable that supports the devices’ signal over the run. Use an existing conduit pull string when available; for a cavity, fish tape or rods may help guide the line.
- Attach the cable carefully. Secure the cable to the pull line so the joint is unlikely to snag. A tapered wrap around the connection can help it pass through the route. Protect the HDMI plug; do not use it as a handle.
- Pull slowly and smoothly. If possible, have one person feed the cable while another draws the line. Keep bends gentle. Stop if the connector binds or the cable catches; forcing it can damage the connector or cable.
- Leave slack at both ends. Keep enough accessible cable at each opening to connect equipment and make future adjustments. Follow the cable and conduit makers’ instructions because the sources do not establish a universal bend radius, pulling-force limit, or conduit size.
- Test before finishing the openings. Connect the actual source and display, then check picture and sound. Only fit finish plates or otherwise close the route after the connection works.
Can you pull HDMI through conduit?
Yes, if the conduit has enough clearance for the cable and its connector and the bends allow the cable to pass without force. Use the pull string if the conduit has one, attach the cable so the joint does not snag, and draw it evenly. Conduit can protect the run and make later replacement easier, but a tight fit or sharp bend can stop the pull or damage the cable. For longer routes, that guide recommends fiber or active optical HDMI, but this is vendor advice—not a universal cutoff. Check the chosen cable’s supported signal and installation requirements rather than assuming one cable type suits every distance.

HDMI is low-voltage signal cabling; it does not make an ordinary TV power cord safe to conceal in a wall. Do not improvise by feeding the television’s normal power cord through the wall. A mains receptacle or other permanent in-wall power arrangement has different requirements and may call for an electrician. Legrand’s manufacturer page discusses that distinction and recommends an electrician for a permanently wired receptacle in its constrained-wall example; the specific kit on the page is discontinued, so it is not a current product recommendation (Legrand / On-Q manufacturer page).
