If Windows 11 remains on “Getting Ready” after a cumulative update, the message alone cannot tell you whether the update is still progressing or startup has failed. Check whether the screen changes, Windows eventually reaches sign-in, or the computer keeps restarting. If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and try the least disruptive suitable recovery option first. Have your BitLocker recovery key available if the device is encrypted.
First check what the PC is doing
There is no documented universal wait-time cutoff for this specific screen. The words “Getting Ready” and the time spent there do not identify the cause. Pay attention instead to what happens next:

- The screen changes or Windows reaches sign-in: Let startup finish. Once Windows opens, use the update troubleshooting steps below if the problem continues.
- The PC repeatedly restarts or never reaches sign-in: Treat this as a startup problem and try to access WinRE.
- You are unsure whether it is progressing: Avoid choosing a disruptive recovery option based only on the message. Note whether the display or restart behavior changes, then proceed to recovery if Windows does not start.
Microsoft does not publish a frequency or success-rate statistic for this exact post-update symptom, so a precise average wait or likelihood of a particular cause cannot be stated.

If Windows starts, troubleshoot Windows Update
If you reach the desktop, begin with Microsoft’s recommended Windows 11 update troubleshooting route: open the Get Help app and run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter. Follow its prompts, then check whether Windows Update reports another issue or whether the update problem is resolved. Microsoft’s general guidance is at Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.

If Windows will not start, open Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE provides recovery tools when Windows cannot start normally. If the recovery screen appears after failed starts, choose its troubleshooting options. If it does not appear, Microsoft documents using startup interruptions to trigger Automatic Repair; see Recovery options in Windows for the available ways to enter the recovery environment.
On an encrypted PC, WinRE may ask for the BitLocker recovery key before allowing access to recovery tools. Locate that key before proceeding. If the computer belongs to your workplace or school, contact its IT department if the recovery steps do not resolve the startup problem.
Choose a recovery option in order of disruption
Microsoft recommends choosing the least disruptive suitable option and backing up important files before recovery where possible. The right choice depends on whether Windows starts, whether WinRE is accessible, whether you can unlock BitLocker, and whether preserving personal files is essential.
Try Startup Repair for a startup problem
In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, then follow the prompts. Microsoft describes Startup Repair as “a built-in Windows recovery tool that helps fix issues preventing the operating system from starting.” It is intended for certain startup problems; it is not a guaranteed fix for every update stall. Details are in Microsoft’s Startup Repair guidance.
Uninstall the latest quality update if the problem began after it
If startup trouble began after the recent cumulative update, WinRE can offer an option to remove the latest quality update. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall updates, then choose the latest quality update when that is the relevant update type. Microsoft says, “If the problem started after a recent Windows update, uninstalling it might fix the issue.” That is a possibility, not a promise: Microsoft notes that some updates cannot be uninstalled.

Removing a security update has a security trade-off because it removes a protection update. Consider that consequence before choosing it. Microsoft’s instructions and limitations are in How to uninstall a Windows Update.
Use Safe Mode only when you can reach startup settings
If WinRE is available and you need to troubleshoot further, Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings provides startup modes including Safe Mode. Safe Mode can help with further diagnosis, but it is not itself a repair for the update. See Microsoft’s Windows startup settings guidance.

Reserve reset or reinstall for later
Resetting or reinstalling Windows can have more serious consequences than running Startup Repair or uninstalling an update. Back up files first if you can, and read the options carefully before confirming. If you use Windows installation media created on another working PC to reinstall, Microsoft warns that this removes everything from the device. Installation media is therefore a late-stage recovery route, not a diagnostic tool or a guaranteed fix; a suitable USB flash drive is needed only if you do not already have one available. Review Microsoft’s recovery options and consequences before proceeding.
