A bad Ethernet cable can prevent a wired link from coming up, make it drop repeatedly, or contribute to packet errors—even when a link light is on. None of those signs proves the cable is at fault: a disabled or damaged port, loose plug, or another network component can cause similar symptoms. The quickest useful check is to reseat both ends, then try a known-good cable while keeping the same devices and ports.

What a bad Ethernet cable can look like

  • No link: The devices do not establish a wired connection. A loose connector, incorrect port, disabled port, or faulty device can cause the same result.
  • Intermittent link: The connection repeatedly drops and returns. A marginal cable is one possible cause.
  • Errors despite a link light: A lit indicator confirms link status, not that the cable is working cleanly. A compromised cable may still be associated with packet errors or repeated link loss, as Cisco explains in its LAN switching troubleshooting guidance.
  • Different status at each end: One device may show a link while the other does not. This can point to a cable or connection problem, but it is not conclusive.

If Ethernet link remains stable but websites or online services are unreachable, the cause may be elsewhere in the network, such as the router, internet service, or device configuration. A cable check is most relevant when the wired link itself is absent, unstable, or reporting errors.

Check the cable and connection first

  1. Confirm the ports. Make sure each end is plugged into the intended Ethernet port—not a nearby port with a different purpose. Verify that both devices and ports are enabled.
  2. Reseat both plugs. Unplug and firmly reconnect the cable at each end. A plug that is not fully seated can interrupt the connection.
  3. Inspect the connectors and cable. Look for dirt, damaged or missing contacts, obvious crushing, or sharp bends. Visible damage is a reason for concern, but a cable can also have an internal fault that is not visible.
  4. Check link status at both ends. Look at the port indicators or the device’s interface status. In Cisco’s switch troubleshooting example, an appropriate cable between enabled ports should establish link within a few seconds; timing and indicator behavior vary by hardware, so do not treat that interval as a universal rule. A link light alone does not establish that the cable is error-free.

Cisco’s troubleshooting guide also recommends checking loose connections, connector-pin damage, port selection, and whether ports are enabled.

Isolate the cable with a known-good substitution

Use a cable that you know works and that is appropriate for the connection. Leave the same devices and ports in place while swapping cables, if practical. Changing one thing at a time makes the result more informative.

Klein Tools VDV526-200 LAN Scout Jr Cable Tester Ethernet Cable Tester Kit
  • VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester for data (RJ45) terminated cables and patch cords, ensuring comprehensive testing capabilities
  • LARGE BACKLIT LCD: Backlit LCD display enables easy reading of pin-to-pin wiremap results, even in low-lit areas
  • COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, Split-Pair faults, Cross-over, and Shield, providing thorough fault detection
  • INTUITIVE USER INTERFACE: User-friendly interface with three buttons and simple, easy-to-identify test responses, ensuring a smooth testing experience
  • MULTIPLE TONE GENERATOR STYLES: Tone on a single wire, wire pair, or all 8 conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (solid/warble); requires probe Cat. No. VDV500-123 (sold separately)
  • If the problem disappears: The original cable becomes a stronger suspect. Replace it with a cable suited to the link’s speed and installation requirements.
  • If the problem remains: The cable may not be the cause. Try another known-good port, then consider the endpoint, port configuration, patch panel, or any intermediary equipment in the connection.

Avoid using an arbitrary substitute whose condition or type is unknown. Cisco recommends a known-good cable for comparison because the replacement itself must not introduce uncertainty.

When to use an Ethernet cable tester

A tester is most useful when you cannot readily swap a patch cable—for example, when diagnosing a long installed run—or when you need to check multiple runs. Choose the tool based on what you need to establish. Fluke Networks distinguishes basic verification, qualification, and certification in its overview of network cable testers.

Network LAN Cable Tester, VDV Tester, LAN Explorer with Remote
  • Cable tester with single button testing of RJ11, RJ12 and RJ45 terminated voice and data cables
  • Tests CAT3, CAT5e and CAT6/6A cables
  • Fast LED responses indicate cable status (Pass, Miswire, Open-Fault, Short-Fault, and Shield)
  • Test remote stores securely in tester body
  • Compact tester easily fits in your pocket
  • Verification (wiremap or continuity): Checks whether conductors connect to the expected points and can help identify wiring faults or breaks. It does not establish that a link will support a particular data rate.
  • Qualification: Assesses whether a link can support a specified capability, such as Gigabit Ethernet.
  • Certification: Performs a separate standards-oriented test of a cabling installation. This is generally a technician’s tool for formal installation requirements, rather than a necessary first purchase for a single home cable.

For a single suspect patch cable, substituting one known to work is usually a simpler diagnostic than buying a tester. For fixed cabling or repeated faults, testing can help distinguish wiring problems from other link issues.
