A Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path identifies a network resource by naming its host and share, then—optionally—a folder or file within that share. For example, \Server2ShareTestFoo.txt points to the file Foo.txt in the Test folder on the Share resource hosted by Server2.

What does UNC mean?

UNC stands for Universal Naming Convention. Microsoft defines a UNC string as a way to specify the location of resources such as shared files or devices. It is a naming format: it describes where a resource is, rather than naming one particular file-sharing protocol. Microsoft Open Specifications, [MS-DTYP] section 2.2.57

What does a UNC path look like?

For a file-space resource, Microsoft specifies this general form: \host-nameshare-name, optionally followed by object-name. The host identifies the server or domain hosting the resource, the share identifies the resource exposed there, and the optional object path identifies an item within the share, such as a folder or file. Example, component by component

In \Server2ShareTestFoo.txt:

  • Server2 is the host.
  • Share is the share.
  • Test is a folder within the share.
  • Foo.txt is the file.

Microsoft’s .NET documentation describes UNC paths as fully qualified paths for accessing network resources; the server-and-share pair serves as the path’s volume. Microsoft .NET: File path formats

How is a UNC path different from a local drive path?

A local Windows path typically identifies its root with a drive letter, as in C:UsersNamefile.txt. A UNC path identifies its root with a host and share, as in \Server2Sharefile.txt. The first names a local drive volume; the second names a network resource by its server/share location. In Microsoft’s .NET guidance, a UNC path is fully qualified rather than relative to a current drive or folder. Microsoft .NET: File path formats

Does UNC mean the resource uses SMB?

No. UNC is a naming convention, not a synonym for SMB. Microsoft’s specification says the share-name format depends on the file-server protocol and lists SMB, NFS, and NCP as examples. The term “universal” does not mean every operating system, resource, or protocol follows identical path rules. Microsoft Open Specifications, [MS-DTYP] section 2.2.57

What can appear in the host portion?

The host can be represented by a name or address. Microsoft’s specification describes supported host forms including NetBIOS names, fully qualified domain names, IPv4 addresses, and a specified IPv6 literal form. The exact syntax and constraints for share names and path components can depend on the file-server protocol and resource, so a single character or length limit should not be treated as universal. When would you use a UNC path?

Use a UNC path when you need to refer to a network share by its host and share name—for example, to identify a shared folder or a file within it. It makes the network location explicit in the path instead of using a drive-letter root. Whether you can access that location still depends on the network, the share, and your permissions; the path format itself does not grant access.
