Before deleting developer data on a Mac, identify what is using the space and whether the owning app can recreate it. System Data is a changing macOS storage category, not one folder you can safely empty. Start in Storage, inspect large items, use Xcode or macOS controls for the data they manage, and compare the figures afterward.
What System Data means on a Mac
Apple uses System Data for files that do not fit more specific storage categories. Depending on the Mac and its current state, it can include logs, caches, virtual-memory files, runtime resources, temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. Its size can change, and macOS manages the category’s contents; it is not a single folder or a list of items that Storage lets you delete wholesale. Apple’s Mac storage guidance describes the category and its variability.
How to inspect storage before cleanup
Open the Storage view
-
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. On earlier macOS versions, open Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage.

Use a category’s information button or available details to inspect what macOS exposes. Storage does not present all of System Data as one manageable list.
Apple’s instructions for checking storage describe the navigation for current and earlier macOS versions. For large items the Storage view does not identify, use Finder or the app that created them to establish their owner and purpose before removing anything.

Potentially regenerable data: build intermediates, caches, and temporary files. Treat these as disposable only if the app can recreate them or work without them; a folder name containing “cache” is not enough to establish that.
-
Simulator components: Xcode runtimes and individual simulator devices. Keep anything required for the OS and device combinations you still test.

Build outputs with ongoing value: archives or exported builds you may need for release distribution, debugging, or later use.
-
Persistent user data: project source, assets, and downloaded content. Do not mistake these for disposable cache merely because they take up space.

macOS-managed resources: system files and resources in the broad System Data category. Leave their management to macOS rather than deleting arbitrary contents.
Apple’s developer guidance says cache and temporary locations are for data an app can recreate or operate without, and that the system may purge them when storage is low. That recoverability—not a directory name—is the relevant test. See Apple’s file-system guidance for developers.

Remove only unneeded Xcode Simulator components
Use Xcode’s own controls to review installed simulator components. In Xcode, open Settings > Components to select and delete an unused Simulator runtime. To remove an individual simulator device, open Window > Devices and Simulators. Retain runtimes and devices needed by current testing work. Menu labels can differ between Xcode releases, so check the installed version’s interface if a label has changed. Apple documents these controls in its Xcode components guidance and device and simulator guidance.

Review archives before removing them
An Xcode archive is a build output, not automatically disposable cache. Archives created with Product > Archive appear in the Archives organizer and can be used in export and distribution workflows. Review whether each one matters for release history, debugging, or future distribution before deleting it. See Apple’s guidance on distributing apps.
Check whether Content Caching is serving other devices
Content Caching is a macOS service separate from ordinary Xcode build output. It can store Apple software, iCloud content, and downloadable Xcode components such as simulators. If the service is enabled, inspect System Settings > General > Sharing > Content Caching. Its controls show storage use, let you configure cache size and location in supported setups, and include a Reset action to empty cached content. Resetting can mean Apple content has to be downloaded again; first consider whether this Mac is serving other devices on your network. Apple explains the service and its controls in its Content Caching guide.
Use Safe Mode only for a temporary need
Apple says starting a Mac in safe mode clears certain caches that are recreated automatically. This may temporarily free space—for example, when you need room to complete an installation—but it is not a permanent cleanup recipe. Follow Apple’s instructions for starting your Mac in safe mode for the Mac’s type.

-
Do not try to empty “System Data” as though it were a single directory; macOS manages a changing set of files in that category.

Do not remove an Xcode archive until you have checked whether it is still useful for distribution, release history, or debugging.
-
Do not remove a Simulator runtime simply because it is large if you still need it for testing.
-
Do not treat Content Caching as developer build data by default; it may be serving software downloads or iCloud content to other devices.
There is no universal safe list of manual deletion paths or guaranteed amount of space to recover across macOS and Xcode versions. Prefer the relevant app’s controls over hard-coded recursive deletion commands.
Verify what changed
After each cleanup, return to the same Storage view and compare its figures with your baseline. Give macOS time to refresh the category display. Record the change you actually see on this Mac; System Data varies with system state, so no single reclaimable-space estimate applies to every machine.
