Browser-based file tools can process a document on your device: you choose or drop a file, the page reads it through the browser, and JavaScript or WebAssembly performs the operation and prepares a download. In that workflow, the document does not need to be uploaded to a processing server. But “browser-based” alone does not prove that a particular site or feature sends no data over the network; check the specific tool and operation.

How a browser-based file tool processes a file

  1. You select or drop the file. A page can access files you make available through a file picker or drag-and-drop. The browser exposes the selection as File objects, which let the application read file contents and metadata. MDN explains that “The File API enables web applications to access files and their contents” in its File API documentation.
  2. The page reads and processes it. JavaScript can use browser APIs to read and manipulate the file. For computationally intensive work, the application may use WebAssembly code alongside JavaScript.
  3. The page prepares an output. The result can be represented as file-like data and offered as a download. In a client-side workflow, the file’s contents need not be sent to a server for processing.

This describes a possible architecture, not a guarantee about every service. A site still has to deliver its page and application code, and an individual feature may make additional network requests or rely on a remote service.

What WebAssembly does—and does not—tell you

WebAssembly is a compact bytecode format that can be produced from languages such as C, C++ and Rust. It runs in the browser alongside JavaScript and is designed to support computationally intensive applications at near-native speed. That can make codecs and other demanding routines practical in a web page. JavaScript remains useful for application logic and browser APIs; WebAssembly complements it rather than replacing it.

WebAssembly runs within the browser’s sandbox and is subject to browser security policies, but it is not a privacy feature by itself. The key question is whether the selected file’s contents leave your device. Browser-local computation and network activity are separate issues: a page might process a file locally while also loading code, models or analytics from other hosts. See MDN’s WebAssembly concepts for the technology’s role and design.

How to check whether a specific tool uploads a file

  1. Inspect requests during a test. Open your browser’s developer tools, select the Network panel, then choose and process a non-sensitive test file. Look for requests to processing endpoints or request data that appears to include the file contents. A request appearing during processing is a reason to investigate, but timing alone does not prove that it contains your document.
  2. Try the operation offline after loading the page. Load the page first, disconnect from the network, then try the same operation. If it still works, that is evidence the observed operation does not need a live connection after loading.
  3. Read documentation for the exact feature. Check whether the service explains which operations run locally, whether external code or models are needed, and whether any features use a server.

These checks only show what happened in the run you observed. An offline test does not establish what the page requested before you disconnected, and a single test cannot audit every code path or feature. ImagePDF.Tools describes network inspection and an offline-after-load check as practical ways to examine its claims in its privacy information; those are the vendor’s recommendations, not an independent audit.

What local-processing claims mean for PDF tools

BentoPDF describes its PDF tools as browser-local and lists conversion, editing, merging, splitting, compression, signing and OCR. Its documentation also discusses self-hosting and offline OCR assets. PDFPrivy describes a workflow in which the browser reads selected document bytes, processes them in the page and returns a downloadable result. These are examples of the client-side model, but their privacy statements are vendor descriptions, not independent verification: BentoPDF documentation and PDFPrivy’s explanation of how it works.

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

When comparing tools, assess the particular operation you need. One tool may handle some tasks locally but require an external model or service for another. Check the operation’s processing location, any external code or model downloads, whether it works offline after loading, and whether the implementation can be self-hosted.

When to avoid putting a file into a web tool

For a sensitive document, do not rely on a general “browser-based” or “private” label. Review the service’s documentation and the exact feature’s behavior. If you cannot establish that the file stays on your device, use an offline or self-hosted option you trust, or avoid processing the document with that service.
