Protein is essential, but a healthy diet is not a high-protein diet by default. The World Health Organization (WHO) says protein providing 10–15% of daily energy is generally sufficient for adults; how much that means in grams depends on total energy intake and individual circumstances. Balance, food variety, and an appropriate mix of protein, carbohydrates, and fats matter as much as protein itself.

Why does protein balance matter?

Protein supplies building blocks for body structures such as muscle and for functional molecules such as hormones and enzymes. But it is one part of a diet that must also meet energy and other nutrient needs. WHO describes a healthy diet through four principles: adequacy, balance, moderation, and diversity. As WHO puts it, “Healthy diets come in many forms, but the four core principles of adequacy, balance, moderation and diversity should be the foundation of any healthy diet.” (WHO, Healthy diet fact sheet, 26 January 2026)

In practice, balance means getting enough energy and nutrients without routinely exceeding needs, and balancing energy intake with expenditure. Protein should fit into a varied pattern that also includes carbohydrates and fats—not crowd out other foods the body needs.

How much protein do I need a day?

WHO says protein should generally provide 10–15% of total daily energy for adults. To illustrate what that share could mean, WHO gives approximately 50–75 grams per day for a healthy-weight person consuming about 2,000 calories a day. That is an example tied to those assumptions, not a universal gram target or a prescription for every adult. (WHO, 2026)

If you want to compare nutrient values in foods, the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements points readers to USDA FoodData Central. Food-composition data can help with comparisons, but it does not establish an individual medical target. (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, Nutrient Recommendations and Databases)

What does a balanced protein diet look like?

Think in terms of the whole eating pattern rather than trying to maximize protein at each meal. WHO encourages variety, minimally processed foods, and a mix that fits local food culture and circumstances. A practical example is lentils, chickpeas, or beans served with vegetables and whole grains; other meals can include plant or animal protein choices that suit your preferences and access. This is an illustration of variety, not a prescribed meal plan.

When comparing protein foods, consider more than their protein content:

  • Mix, Bake, Blend – recreate your favorites smoothie, pancakes, muffins, cookies, donuts, brownies, or protein bars
  • Source and variety: Plant and animal foods can both contribute protein. A varied pattern is preferable to relying on one narrow set of foods.
  • Processing and accompanying ingredients: Consider whether a food is minimally processed and whether it comes with substantial sodium, free sugars, or unhealthy fats.
  • Personal fit: Culture, preferences, budget, availability, and dietary customs influence which choices are realistic and sustainable.
  • Individual needs: Age, activity, and clinical circumstances can change what is appropriate.

WHO and FAO materials show adult macronutrient distribution ranges of 45–75% of daily energy from carbohydrates and 15–30% from fat. These are broad ranges for energy shares, not an individual meal formula; they put protein in context as one part of the overall balance. (WHO and FAO, 2024)

Can you get enough protein from plant foods?

Yes. WHO names pulses—including lentils, chickpeas, beans, and dried peas—as protein sources. It says a shift toward more plant-based protein may benefit many adults, particularly when it replaces red meat. This is a population-level recommendation, not a guarantee of a particular outcome for every person. (WHO, 2026)

Plant foods can be part of a varied pattern alongside vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. The useful question is not whether one source is universally best, but whether the overall pattern supplies what you need and works with your circumstances.

Do athletes need more protein?

Some people may consume a greater share of energy from protein. WHO notes adolescents and people building or maintaining substantial muscle, including athletes and bodybuilders, among those who may do so. That observation is not a personalized target: individual requirements depend on factors such as age and activity, and the cited guidance does not set one figure for every athlete. (WHO, 2026)

Higher protein intake does not by itself guarantee muscle gain, and the general guidance does not establish that supplements are necessary. Anyone seeking an individualized plan should consider their complete diet and circumstances with a qualified professional.

Is too much protein bad for your kidneys?

WHO cautions that excessive protein intake can place a metabolic burden on the body, particularly the kidneys. The cited fact sheet does not define a single universal threshold for “excessive,” so it would be misleading to give one cutoff that applies to everyone. (WHO, 2026)

If you have kidney disease, another medical condition, pregnancy, or a specific clinical nutrition need, consult a qualified clinician or registered dietitian for advice suited to you. The population-level ranges here do not resolve individual medical requirements.
