Huawei can plausibly become a stronger alternative in selected markets and technology layers, particularly China’s device ecosystem and AI computing. But the evidence available as of October 2026 does not show that it can replace US technology companies globally or match them across products, software, performance, supply and market access. The more defensible answer is that Huawei could become a consequential, uneven competitor; full-stack parity remains unproven.
Huawei is building a portfolio, not just a phone business
Huawei’s ambitions span telecom network equipment, IT products and solutions, cloud services, digital power, intelligent vehicle solutions and consumer devices. That breadth matters: the company is trying to connect hardware, operating systems, cloud infrastructure and computing systems into an ecosystem, rather than challenge a single US product with a single substitute.
Huawei reported CNY880.9 billion in revenue and CNY68 billion in net profit for 2025. It also reported CNY192.3 billion in research and development spending, equal to 21.8% of its annual revenue. These company-reported figures indicate substantial resources for investment. They do not establish that each business is competitive with its closest rival, or that investment will translate into better products, broader adoption or dependable access to components.
Where Huawei has the clearest case today
Devices and HarmonyOS, especially in China
Huawei reported that, at the end of 2025, more than 36 million devices ran HarmonyOS 5 or HarmonyOS 6. It also reported more than 10 million registered HarmonyOS developers and over 350,000 apps and services in AppGallery. Those figures show a sizeable ecosystem by Huawei’s own accounting, but they do not measure active users, app quality, developer activity, or how well the available apps serve a particular user compared with Android or iOS.

The strategic point is integration: Huawei can build devices and an operating system around its own ecosystem, and its FY2025 reporting described the HUAWEI MateBook Fold as a HarmonyOS-powered foldable PC. But a device running HarmonyOS is not, by itself, proof that the platform offers equivalent software, compatibility or support in every market. The company’s reported device base is strongest evidence of momentum, not global platform parity.
Cloud services and enterprise relationships
Huawei reported that Huawei Cloud had 34 geographical regions and 101 availability zones at year-end 2025, with services available in more than 170 countries and regions. It also reported over 10 million cloud developers and 59,000 partners. In its 2024 annual report, Huawei had reported 33 regions, 96 availability zones, over 7.8 million cloud developers and 45,000 partners. This is year-over-year expansion in Huawei’s own figures, not an independent comparison of cloud usage, service quality or market share.

International examples show that Huawei has customer engagement outside China, but the available reporting does not establish how large or critical those deployments are. IT Pro reported that spokespeople from French supermarket Auchan and Turkish investment bank İşbank Türkiye appeared at Huawei Connect sessions. Those appearances do not disclose deployment scale, the alternatives evaluated, or the regulatory and commercial conditions behind the customers’ choices.
AI computing is the sharpest test—and the hardest result to interpret
IT Pro reported in September 2026 that DeepSeek announced a move from Nvidia AI chips to Huawei Ascend infrastructure. That makes the announcement a notable sign of customer adoption. It is not a controlled benchmark or proof that Huawei systems outperform or match Nvidia systems under comparable conditions.

Context matters: US trade restrictions constrain the supply of advanced Nvidia and AMD chips into China. That creates a stronger incentive to build and use domestic alternatives, and it means a customer move in China may reflect both Huawei’s capabilities and the choices available to the customer. It demonstrates relevance in a strategically important market; it does not settle how Huawei would fare in an unconstrained global procurement contest.
Roadmaps are not the same as shipped, tested capacity
The Associated Press reported Huawei’s plans for Atlas 950 and Atlas 960 SuperPoDs and future Ascend chips, with many chips linked into large systems. Huawei has described its ambitions in superlative terms, including claims about the systems’ power. Those descriptions remain company positioning unless independently benchmarked. A roadmap can show intent and technical direction, but the practical test is whether systems ship at scale and deliver competitive performance, cost, reliability and support.

How to judge whether Huawei can compete with the US tech stack
“Big US tech companies” is not one market. Huawei’s prospects need to be judged separately by product layer, geography and use case. A credible alternative in Chinese AI infrastructure does not automatically replace a global cloud provider, a mobile operating system or a broad consumer software ecosystem.

The missing comparisons are important. Without independently measured performance, cost, market share and supply data across comparable deployments, reported scale and customer announcements cannot support a portfolio-wide claim of equivalence.

So, can Huawei pull it off?
Huawei has the resources, product breadth and ecosystem activity to become a meaningful alternative in defined markets and use cases. Its prospects look strongest where it can build around domestic demand, notably China’s device ecosystem and AI-compute push. Its cloud footprint and international customer engagement also show that its reach is not limited to consumer devices at home.
Replacing US platforms globally is a much larger claim. The evidence does not establish that Huawei can match competitors across independent performance tests, software breadth, component supply, deployment scale and market access. Treat Huawei as an increasingly consequential competitor with uneven strengths—not as a proven one-for-one substitute for the US technology sector.
