fzf-make helps you find and run a project task without remembering its full command: start it in your project directory, type to fuzzy-filter the available tasks, check the preview, and select one to execute. It works with several existing task runners rather than replacing them.
What fzf-make does
fzf-make is an interactive command-line selector for tasks defined in a project. Instead of manually looking up a target or script and then typing its command, you can search a list, inspect a preview, and run the selected entry. The project describes this workflow in its README.
It also provides a history pane for revisiting earlier commands and a repeat mode for running the last executed command again. Additional arguments can be supplied through a popup interface.
Which task runners does it support?
The README documents these command sources:
- make: lists make targets and supports make includes.
- npm, pnpm, and yarn: lists package scripts, with workspace script collection documented for all three. npm workspace support uses
npm queryand requires npm 8.16.0 or later. - just: lists recipes.
- Task: lists tasks. For Task includes, fzf-make uses
task --list-all --json, which requires Task v3.44.0 or later.
The task definitions and their execution still belong to the corresponding runner. fzf-make presents the available commands and launches the one you choose.

How to use it
- Open a terminal in the project directory and start
fzf-make. - Type part of a target, script, recipe, or task name to filter the list.
- Review the preview to check the command before choosing it.
- Select the entry to execute it. Use the history pane to revisit earlier commands, or repeat mode to rerun the last command.
- If the command needs extra arguments, use the popup interface described in the project README.
Check project detection and compatibility
fzf-make detects task sources from project files, so first confirm that the relevant definition is in a format it recognizes. The README documents these detection cues:
- make:
GNUmakefile,makefile, orMakefile. - npm, pnpm, and yarn: the respective package-manager lockfiles.
- just:
justfileor.justfilein the current directory or an ancestor directory.
Also ensure the runner or package manager required by the project is installed. Check the README for version requirements that apply to your setup: npm workspace collection requires npm 8.16.0 or later, and Task include handling requires Task v3.44.0 or later. Detection and workspace behavior differ between runners.

Choose an installation route
The project README documents installation through Homebrew, the Arch AUR, Nix/NixOS, Cargo, and mise, as well as prebuilt binaries for Linux amd64 and arm64 and macOS arm64. Choose based on your operating system and architecture, the package manager you already use, and whether you prefer a managed package, a direct binary, or a Cargo installation.

The README’s Cargo example uses Rust toolchain 1.90.0. Installation options and platform support can change; consult the current project README for the applicable instructions before installing. For the release date, the version listing identifies fzf-make 0.75.0 as published on September 22, 2026; the README content surfaced on docs.rs showed version 0.73.0, so those pages do not establish that every documented installation detail is specific to 0.75.0. When fzf-make is a good fit
Use it when a project already has task definitions in one of its supported formats and you want to search and inspect those commands interactively. It is less useful if your project uses an unsupported task format, or if the underlying runner is missing or incompatible. The available project documentation describes features and installation routes, but does not establish independent speed or productivity benchmarks.
