To set a timer on iPhone, open Clock, tap Timers, choose a duration and end sound, then tap Start. If it finishes silently, first check whether the timer is set to Stop Playing instead of an alert sound.
How to set a timer on iPhone

Open the Clock app and tap Timers.

Set the duration. Add a label if you want to identify what the timer is for.

Tap When Timer Ends and choose an alert sound.

You can also ask Siri, “Set the timer for 3 minutes.” Apple says a running timer continues when you switch to another app or the iPhone goes to sleep. Apple’s timer instructions also cover pausing and resuming timers, adding more timers, and removing them.

Why won’t my iPhone timer sound?
Check the timer’s end setting
In Clock, open Timers and inspect When Timer Ends. If you want an audible alert, select a sound rather than Stop Playing.

Make sure “Stop Playing” is not selected
Stop Playing is for ending audio or video playback when the countdown finishes; it is not an end-of-timer tone. To use a timer before sleep to stop media, choose When Timer Ends, select Stop Playing, tap Set, and start the timer.
Keep alarm guidance separate from timer troubleshooting
Apple’s guidance for alarms says to adjust alarm volume at Settings > Sounds & Haptics and check that the alarm sound is not set to None. That guidance concerns alarms and does not establish a complete, version-specific procedure for changing timer volume. Apple also says Silent mode and Do Not Disturb do not affect alarm sound, but its timer instructions do not establish whether those modes affect timer alerts. Apple’s alarm support article covers those alarm-specific settings.

Pause, resume, or manage timers
While a timer is running, you can pause it and resume it later. Clock also supports additional custom, preset, or recently used timers. Remove timers from the Timers screen or clear them from the Lock Screen; the available controls are described in Apple’s timer instructions.
