To reconnect professionally after a long silence, start with a genuine reason for contacting that person, remind them briefly of your shared context, and show interest in what they do now. Then make any request clear, modest, and easy to decline. A message can reopen a conversation; it does not entitle you to a meeting, referral, or reply.

Decide why you want to reconnect

Before you write, get specific about why this person and why now. Are you hoping to catch up, learn about a career path, ask for advice, or discuss a particular job? Knowing the purpose helps you choose the right person and make a reasonable request. Harvard Business Review’s IdeaCast on connecting rather than simply networking recommends thinking about your goals and the people who may be relevant to them.

Keep the relationship in view, too. A former teammate you worked with closely may welcome a warm, informal note. For an old manager or a more distant contact, provide enough detail to help them place you and keep the opening concise. Consider whether their current role relates to your reason for reaching out and how much time or effort you are asking them to give.

Choose a channel that fits the relationship

Email or a personalized LinkedIn message can work for a first note. Use the channel you already used together if it still seems appropriate, and avoid turning a private request into a public comment. For someone you see at a professional event, an in-person conversation may feel natural. Harvard Business Review discusses approaches for both online and in-person networking; the key is to make your opening fit the setting.

If you are unsure whether the person will remember you, choose a channel that gives you space to identify yourself and explain the shared context without demanding an immediate response.

Write a message that feels personal, not transactional

A useful reconnection note has enough context to be recognizable, a real sign of interest in the other person’s current work, and a clear purpose. Harvard’s Mignone Center for Career Success advises leading with curiosity rather than a résumé or job-search request when reconnecting with former colleagues (Harvard FAS career advice).

  1. Open with shared context. Mention a team, project, event, or period when you worked together. Keep it truthful and specific.
  2. Acknowledge the time apart. A simple “It’s been a while” is enough; there is no need for a long apology.
  3. Show interest in their work now. Refer to a role change, project, or other detail you genuinely know, then ask a question or invite them to share an update.
  4. State what you hope for. Say whether you would enjoy catching up, value their perspective, or have a specific question.
  5. Make it easy to decline. Let them know there is no pressure if they are busy or the request does not suit them.

For example, you could adapt this note to your own circumstances:

Hi Maya, I was thinking about the launch project we worked on at Northstar and saw your recent move into climate tech. I’d enjoy hearing how the transition has been. I’m exploring a similar direction and would value 20 minutes to ask about your experience, if you have time in the next few weeks. No worries if your schedule is full.

The example’s project, role, and suggested meeting length are illustrative, not a formula. Use only details that are true, and ask for the amount of time your conversation actually needs. Advice on what to say when reaching out on LinkedIn covers framing requests such as career advice, résumé feedback, and mentorship. Whatever the channel, explain the request rather than assuming familiarity will do the work for you.

If you want job leads or a referral, be candid and specific

It is reasonable to reconnect while job searching, but do not disguise a referral request as a casual catch-up. First give the person context about what you are pursuing and why you thought of them. Identify a particular role or kind of opportunity, and ask whether they would feel comfortable advising you or making an introduction. They may not know your recent work well enough to recommend you, and they may not be able to help.

If you would be glad to speak even if they cannot provide a lead, say so. If the referral is the only reason for contacting them, be straightforward and give them room to decline. A professional relationship can reopen without becoming an obligation.

Follow up thoughtfully, then respect the response

After you have spoken

Send a brief thank-you that refers to something useful they shared. If their advice leads to a concrete step or outcome, let them know; a specific update makes the follow-through more meaningful than a generic thank-you.

If your first message goes unanswered

There is no established universal waiting period or ideal number of follow-ups. As a practical, low-pressure approach, you may send one courteous follow-up after a reasonable interval. If there is still no response, stop rather than escalating across channels. They may be busy, have missed the note, or prefer not to reconnect; you do not need to determine which.

When not to reopen contact

Reconnection is optional. If the relationship ended in conflict or caused harm, you do not have to reach out to meet an expectation of professional etiquette. Consider whether contact would be worthwhile and safe for you; if not, pursue advice or introductions through other people and channels.
