Yes—but only for traffic that actually passes through an encrypted VPN tunnel. On Android, a VPN can make it harder for someone monitoring your local Wi-Fi or your internet provider to see the contents of covered connections. It does not make you anonymous, guarantee that every app or type of traffic uses the tunnel, or remove the need to trust the VPN provider.
What an Android VPN protects—and what it changes
A VPN routes covered traffic from your phone through servers controlled by the VPN provider. When the connection between your phone and the VPN server is encrypted, an observer on the local Wi-Fi network can generally see that your device is communicating with a VPN, but not read the contents of that encrypted tunnel. Your internet provider likewise sees a connection to the VPN rather than the same direct destinations it would see without the VPN. The exact information visible outside the tunnel depends on the traffic and services involved. The FTC explains that a VPN changes who can observe your traffic.
This changes the trust relationship; it does not eliminate it. The VPN operator handles traffic that reaches its servers, so you are relying on that provider’s security and privacy practices instead of relying only on your network operator. A VPN also does not erase identifying details you give a website or other ways a service may recognize you. As the FTC puts it, “A VPN app generally isn’t going to make you entirely anonymous.” FTC consumer guidance.
Does your internet provider still see what you do?
With an active, properly encrypted VPN tunnel, your provider can still observe the connection between your device and the VPN server, along with ordinary connection metadata such as timing and data volume. It generally cannot inspect the contents of traffic carried inside that tunnel. The VPN provider, however, becomes the intermediary for the traffic it receives. A VPN therefore limits some visibility for your internet provider; it does not make your activity invisible to everyone.

Check whether Android is routing traffic through the VPN
Android’s always-on VPN setting can start a VPN service at boot and keep it running. Android also supports blocking network connections that do not use the VPN—a setting commonly called “Block connections without VPN.” Android Developers documents always-on VPN from Android 7.0 (API level 24) and notes that, on Android 8.0 or later, the system shows a persistent notification if an always-on VPN disconnects or cannot connect. - Open your device’s VPN settings. On many Android devices, go to Settings and search for “VPN”; menu paths and labels vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- Select the VPN you use and look for its status and controls. Confirm it is connected. If available, enable Always-on VPN.
- Enable “Block connections without VPN” if you need stricter coverage. This can prevent connections outside the tunnel while the VPN is unavailable, but it may also interrupt connectivity. Android states that always-on VPN can block connections that do not use the VPN. That control is useful, but it is not proof that every kind of traffic on every device is covered. Android Developers: VPN.

Some apps and traffic may bypass the tunnel
VPN apps can exclude selected apps, and some device or service traffic may not use a particular VPN. Google’s Pixel VPN documentation, for example, identifies tethering traffic through USB or a Wi-Fi hotspot, push notifications, Wi-Fi calling and other IMS services, work-profile app traffic, and apps that route directly over Wi-Fi or cellular as traffic not protected by the Pixel VPN. If a particular app or connection matters to you, check the VPN app’s exclusion settings and its documentation for supported traffic. Do not assume that seeing a VPN key icon means every connection from the phone is covered.

How to assess whether a VPN app deserves your trust
Android’s VPN controls can help manage the connection, but they cannot establish that a provider handles data responsibly. Before relying on an app, check the provider and the app’s own disclosures:
- Identify the developer. Look for a clear company or developer identity and credible independent reviews or technical assessments. Security and privacy claims in an app listing are not proof on their own.
- Read the privacy policy and terms. Check what information is collected, how long it is retained, whether it is shared, and why.
- Review requested permissions. Consider whether each permission makes sense for the VPN’s stated functionality.
- Look for clear explanations and consent. Google Play’s policy for apps using Android’s VpnService requires encryption between the device and the VPN tunnel endpoint. It also requires prominent disclosure and affirmative consent in relevant cases involving access to or collection of personal and sensitive data through the service. The policy bars collecting such data without the required disclosure and consent, and bars using VpnService to manipulate or redirect other apps’ traffic for monetization. These rules are a baseline, not certification that an individual app is safe or that its privacy practices match your needs. Google Play policy: VpnService.
- Check for always-on and lockdown support. Find out whether the app works with Android’s always-on and block-without-VPN controls, and whether it excludes any apps or traffic you care about.
The FTC likewise advises consumers to research the VPN app and its developer, consider its permissions, and review its privacy terms. FTC guidance on VPN software.

Expect possible performance and compatibility tradeoffs
Google warns that its Pixel VPN may increase data costs, reduce connection speed, add latency, reduce battery life, or cause some services to behave differently. Those cautions are specific to Google’s Pixel VPN guidance; actual effects vary by device, network, VPN service, and use. Google Pixel Help: Use Google VPN.

It can protect covered traffic from some observers on the path between your phone and the VPN server, provided the tunnel is active and properly encrypted. To understand what that protection means on your phone, check Android’s VPN and lockdown settings, confirm which apps and traffic the service covers, and decide whether the provider is trustworthy enough to handle that traffic. The VPN is one part of a privacy setup—not a guarantee of anonymity or universal protection.
