Sometimes—but not reliably in every test, and not in a way that proves high-resolution audio always sounds better. A 2016 meta-analysis found a small but statistically significant ability to distinguish high-resolution audio from standard-resolution audio, with much stronger results after extensive listener training. In a different set of double-blind tests, a CD-standard conversion was not detected at normal-to-loud listening levels on any of the tested systems. Those findings address different signals and test conditions, so neither settles every listener’s experience.
What does “telling the difference” mean?
The phrase can describe several different claims, and evidence for one does not establish the others:
- Discrimination: detecting that two samples differ.
- Identification: correctly naming which sample is high-resolution, CD-standard, or another format.
- Preference: choosing one version as more enjoyable or better-sounding.
- Attribution: showing that a perceived difference comes from the format or equipment being tested.
A listener may detect a difference without identifying its cause or preferring either version. A test that establishes discrimination therefore does not, by itself, demonstrate better sound quality or justify a purchase.

What controlled listening studies found
High-resolution versus standard-resolution audio
Joshua D. Reiss’s 2016 meta-analysis combined 18 published experiments, more than 400 participants, and over 12,500 trials. It found a small but statistically significant ability to discriminate high-resolution audio from standard audio at 16-bit and 44.1- or 48-kHz rates. The effect increased substantially when listeners received extensive training. These figures describe the body of experiments, not the percentage of audiophiles who can hear a difference. The reviewed evidence does not establish a population-wide success rate. Audio Engineering Society: Reiss, “A Meta-Analysis of High Resolution Audio Perceptual Evaluation” (2016).

A CD-standard conversion loop
In a 2007 AES report, E. Brad Meyer and David R. Moran described more than a year of double-blind tests comparing high-resolution playback with the same signal passed through a 16-bit/44.1-kHz conversion loop. Their report found the loop undetectable at normal-to-loud listening levels by all subjects on all systems tested. Participants included professional recording engineers, recording students, and dedicated audiophiles; the playback systems included professional monitors and a high-end electrostatic-speaker system. The loop’s noise was reported audible only at very elevated levels. This result applies to that conversion loop and those test conditions, not to every high-resolution recording or device. Audio Engineering Society: Meyer and Moran, “Audibility of a CD-Standard A/DA/A Loop Inserted into High-Resolution Audio Playback” (2007).
WAV versus high-bitrate MP3
A 2016 AES convention pilot compared 44.1-kHz/16-bit WAV with 256-kbps MP3 versions of the same musical material using a mix-matching task aimed at audio engineers. Its abstract reports trends that generally coincided with the researchers’ hypotheses and notes that age, production or musical experience, listening-test experience, and preferred genre could affect accuracy and speed. It is not a definitive finding that all listeners can—or cannot—distinguish these formats. Audio Engineering Society: Martin et al., “Can We Hear The Difference? Testing the Audibility of Artifacts in High Bit Rate MP3 Audio” (2016).

Why these findings are not contradictory
The studies did not ask the same question under identical conditions. They used different signals and comparisons, including high-resolution versus standard-resolution material, a conversion loop, and WAV versus MP3. Listener preparation and tasks also differed. A small average effect in a meta-analysis can coexist with a particular test in which no one detects a specific conversion at ordinary-to-loud levels. Neither finding should be stretched into a universal rule.

How to interpret an ABX or double-blind test
In an ABX test, a listener hears known samples A and B, then an unknown sample X and must decide whether X matches A or B. Repeated, controlled choices test whether the listener can discriminate the samples more reliably than guessing. Double-blinding helps prevent knowledge of sample identity from influencing the listener or administrator.

For a fair comparison, the test should use the same source or master where possible, match playback levels, and let the listener switch quickly between brief, comparable excerpts. Sessions should be short enough to limit fatigue. The AES material on testing also emphasizes attention, listening conditions, and training; slow switching can strain short-term auditory memory. Audio Engineering Society: Clark, “Ten years of A/B/X Testing” (1991); Audio Engineering Society: survey forum material on high-resolution listening-test methods and interpretation.
- If a listener does not pass: that means discrimination was not demonstrated under those particular test conditions. It does not prove that no listener could hear any difference in another signal or context.
- If a listener does pass: that supports discrimination in that test. It does not show which version was preferred, whether the difference matters in everyday listening, or what technical feature caused it.
- When reading a result: look for the task, source material, level matching, switching speed, training, equipment, environment, and number of trials—not just the headline claim.
What the evidence cannot tell you
An AES survey page describes a comparison of 20 native high-resolution PCM recordings with 44.1-kHz/16-bit conversions made from the same masters. It reports more than 400 responses from professional engineers, experienced audiophiles, enthusiasts, and novices using varied personal systems. The accessible page does not provide the full outcome or a confirmed publication date, so its response count cannot be treated as a success rate or decisive result. Together, the reviewed studies do not provide a comprehensive answer for every modern streaming service or codec, genre, hearing profile, headphone, room, or listening habit. Nor do they establish a universal percentage of audiophiles who can hear a difference. Their results are meaningful within the specific comparisons and conditions described.

Controlled evidence supports a conditional answer: some listeners can discriminate some high-resolution and standard-resolution material, especially after extensive training, while other specific tests have found a difference undetectable at normal-to-loud listening levels. Detection is not the same as preference, and neither result alone tells you whether a higher-resolution file, DAC, amplifier, or other upgrade will improve your own listening. The studies do not establish a universal purchasing recommendation.
