A private IP address is an address set aside for use within private networks, rather than as a globally unique address on the public Internet. In IPv4, the private ranges are 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, and 192.168.0.0/16. IPv6 has a distinct local-use category called Unique Local Addresses (ULAs), in FC00::/7.

What a private IP address means

“Private” describes how an address is allocated and used for routing; it does not mean the address is globally unique. The same private address can be used on separate home, business, or organizational networks because it only needs to be unique within a network, or among networks that coordinate with one another.

RFC 1918 says private-network route information should not be propagated across inter-enterprise links, and packets using private source or destination addresses should not be forwarded across those links. As a result, private addresses are not intended to be directly reachable across the public Internet.

Which IPv4 addresses are private?

RFC 1918 identifies three IPv4 blocks for private networks. IANA also lists these blocks as private-use addresses.

Prefix IPv4 range
10.0.0.0/8 10.0.0.0–10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0/12 172.16.0.0–172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0/16 192.168.0.0–192.168.255.255

The boundaries matter: not every address beginning with 172 is private. Only addresses from 172.16.0.0 through 172.31.255.255 fall within the private block. Organizations can use these ranges without coordinating assignments with IANA or an Internet registry. RFC 1918 and IANA’s IPv4 Special-Purpose Address Registry document the ranges.

Does IPv6 have private IP addresses?

IPv6 does not use the IPv4 private ranges above. Its related local-use category is the Unique Local Address (ULA), defined by RFC 4193 under the FC00::/7 prefix. ULAs are intended for local communications and are not expected to be routed on the global Internet. They can be routed within a site, or between a limited set of sites when the networks explicitly agree to do so. IANA labels FC00::/7 “Unique Local Unicast” in its IPv6 address-space registry; the format and intended scope are specified in RFC 4193.

Can two networks use the same private IP address?

Yes. Reuse across separate networks is a central feature of private addressing: an address only needs to be unique within the relevant private network or cooperating group of networks. If networks with overlapping private addresses are connected, the overlap can create conflicts. They may need coordination or address translation, depending on how they are interconnected and what communication is required.

Can a private IP address access the Internet?

A private address is not directly globally reachable, but that does not mean a device using one can never use Internet services. RFC 1918 distinguishes direct IP connectivity to outside hosts from access to external services through mediating gateways. A gateway can provide a path to a service without making the private address itself a globally routable address.

Does a private IP address make a device secure?

No. The label describes address allocation and routing context, not the device’s security. A private address alone does not establish that a device is protected, nor does it prove that the device cannot reach external services. Security depends on the network’s controls and configuration, not simply on whether an address is private.
