To add a product in WooCommerce, open Products > Add New in your WordPress admin, enter the product name and price, choose the right product type, add the relevant details and image, then select Publish. The editor starts with a simple product; other types change the fields and how shoppers buy or receive the item.
How to add a product in WooCommerce
-
In your WordPress admin, go to Products > Add New. The new listing defaults to Simple product. WooCommerce says a product name and price are enough to begin selling, but useful listings typically need details that help customers understand the item. WooCommerce product management documentation
-
Enter the product name and add a description explaining what the item is and why it is useful. In the product data area, enter the regular price. Add a sale price if you are offering a discount, or cost-of-goods information if you use that field.

Choose the product type before completing the remaining fields. The type determines which settings appear and how the listing behaves; the options are explained below.
-
If you track stock, configure the inventory settings. For a physical item that needs shipping, review its weight, dimensions and any shipping class your store uses. Virtual products do not show the shipping section.
-
In the right-hand Product image panel, choose an image for the listing. WooCommerce recommends an image at least 800 × 800 pixels. Your theme can affect the image controls and how product images appear. WooCommerce product images documentation
-
Select Publish. Use the product view link afterward to check how the listing appears to customers.

Choose the right WooCommerce product type
Product types are not all alternatives on the same axis. Simple, variable, grouped and external/affiliate describe how shoppers select or buy products. Virtual and downloadable describe fulfillment settings, and can be combined with a product type where appropriate.
| Choice | How it works | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Simple | A single product without customer-selected variations; it defaults to a physical, shippable item. | One item with no choices such as size or color. |
| Variable | Shoppers select an option, and each variation can have its own price, stock and other data. | A product offered in choices such as sizes or colors. |
| Grouped | One page presents multiple existing products that shoppers can add individually. | A set of related products that should be shown together while remaining separate items. |
| External/Affiliate | The listing uses a product URL and button text to send shoppers to a purchase destination elsewhere. | A product sold and checked out on another destination. |
How to add a variable product
Choose Variable product in the product data type selector when customers need to choose an option, such as size or color. Set up the product’s options and variations, then enter the data that applies to each variation. For example, different sizes can have different prices or stock levels. Check that the choices and variation details match what you actually sell before publishing. If every customer receives the same item at the same price with no selection, a simple product is the more direct fit.

Virtual products
Enable Virtual for a service or another item that does not need shipping. WooCommerce removes the shipping fields and does not use that product to trigger shipping calculations. WooCommerce product management documentation
Downloadable products
Enable Downloadable when the purchase should provide one or more files. Configure the file and, if needed, a download limit and expiry. Downloadable by itself does not remove shipping: if the product is not physically shipped, enable Virtual as well. WooCommerce product management documentation
Check the listing before customers see it
- Confirm the product type matches the customer’s purchase choices and fulfillment.
- Check the name, description and price, plus sale pricing if applicable.
- Review stock settings for products you track and shipping details for shippable items.
- Verify the image and open the published product view to inspect the customer-facing listing.
The exact editor presentation can vary when a theme, page builder or extension changes the interface. WooCommerce also documents product gallery video as a beta feature: it must be enabled and uses video from the site Media Library. In the documented state, it is not supported in variation galleries, CSV import/export or the REST API, so it is not a required part of creating a listing. WooCommerce product images documentation
