For the right brush, start with the effect you need: watercolor washes, distressed surfaces, smoke, foliage, or a particular drawing texture. Colorlib’s October 1, 2026 roundup lists 18 Photoshop brush packs across eight style groups and reports 280+ brushes in total. That is the roundup’s stated count, not an independently audited total. The list below preserves its categories and pack details; check each download page for current availability and license terms before using a file commercially.
Watercolor brushes
These two packs target paint-like marks, but one is described as splatter and the other as a broad wash.
- Watercolor Splatters — 32 brushes. Colorlib describes real-paint splatters on cold-press paper. The roundup labels the pack CC BY-ND and says commercial use is allowed; verify the individual pack’s current terms before relying on that summary.
- Free Watercolor Wash Photoshop Brushes — 15 brushes. Hand-painted washes, with sizes of 2500 px or larger stated by the roundup.
For washes, Colorlib suggests trying low opacity and Multiply or Overlay blending. These are starting points, not required settings; the result depends on the image and the brush.

Smoke and fire brushes
These packs provide effect stamps for atmospheric composites and lighting treatments.

- 20 Fog PS Brushes — 20 brushes. Fog and haze shapes, listed at 2500 px.
For smoke and fog, Colorlib suggests varying stamp size and rotation to avoid a repetitive pattern. It also suggests Screen blending for fire and light effects; that is a practical option to try, not a universal recipe.

Hair and fur brushes

Adobe’s free brush packs are another option
If you would rather start with packs offered by Adobe, its brush page describes Megapack, Dry Media, Gouache, Halftones, Manga, Spatter, and Watercolour. Adobe describes Megapack as having over 300 tools and Halftones as having over 100 pressure-sensitive tools; those figures apply to Adobe’s packs, not Colorlib’s 18-pack roundup. The page does not state a publication date for those figures.
Adobe also describes selected brushes as responsive to stylus pressure or tilt. A compatible pressure-sensitive stylus can be useful for those effects, but it is not required to download or import ABR files.

Check the license before using a brush commercially
Colorlib says the packs it lists use either Brusheezy’s standard free license or Creative Commons terms. Its summary says Brusheezy’s standard free license allows personal and commercial use with credit to Brusheezy, while the noted Creative Commons packs require artist credit. These summaries do not establish the current terms for every individual download.
- Open the pack’s own download page and read its current license, not just the roundup’s description.
- Check whether commercial use is allowed and whether attribution is required.
- For Creative Commons packs, confirm the exact license variant and any conditions before distributing work.
- Keep a record of the license and attribution information associated with the file you download.
How to import an ABR brush pack into Photoshop
Photoshop brush packs commonly use the ABR format. Adobe documents these ways to load them; labels can vary by Photoshop version.
- Download the brush file and locate the
.abrfile. - In Photoshop, open the Brushes panel.
- Choose Get More Brushes or Import Brushes, then select the ABR file. Adobe also documents double-clicking the downloaded ABR while Photoshop is open.
- Look for the imported brushes in the Brushes panel and select one to use.
If the brushes do not appear, confirm that you selected the ABR file rather than an archive containing it, and check Adobe’s import instructions for the version of Photoshop you use.

Choose by the job, not just the brush count
The roundup’s pack descriptions do not use a shared performance test, so they should be treated as categorized options rather than a tested ranking. Compare the effect, stated brush count, resolution where given, stamp-versus-stroke behavior, and license. For example, a 6-brush distressed-texture pack may be a better fit for a concrete treatment than a larger pack of unrelated shapes.
