GitHub Education student verification is about current enrollment and account eligibility, not your coding history. GitHub’s published application guidance does not list contribution streaks, public repositories, or engineering activity as requirements. To apply, sign in to a personal GitHub account, provide current proof of student status, and meet the age requirement.
What GitHub checks for student verification
GitHub says applicants must be enrolled in a degree- or diploma-granting program, provide proof of current student status, use a personal GitHub account, and be at least 13 years old. The Student Developer Pack is for eligible students; teachers, researchers, faculty, staff, and other educational users are not eligible for the Pack, though they may be able to access other GitHub Education offerings. Your GitHub activity is not listed as a criterion
The published student application guidance describes enrollment, proof, account ownership, and age. It does not say that GitHub evaluates commit history, a contribution graph, repositories, or coding activity to verify student status. You do not need to build a public portfolio or maintain a contribution streak for the requirements described in that guidance.
What documents can prove current enrollment?
GitHub lists several kinds of evidence. Choose a document that makes your identity, school affiliation, and current status easy to confirm; include a current date where possible.

GitHub’s application guide and troubleshooting guidance emphasize clear evidence. Blurry or incomplete documents, missing dates, and proof that does not establish current status can lead to a request for more information.
Do you need a school email address?
Not necessarily. GitHub says verification is individually tailored, so email requirements can vary by school. If GitHub requires an academic email for your application, add and verify that address on your GitHub account before applying. If your school does not issue academic email addresses, provide official documentation—such as a school webpage or a letter on school letterhead—explaining its policy.

If GitHub does not recognize your school’s email domain
Contact GitHub Education Support with the full school name, the school website URL, and the email domain you are using. A school’s domain issuance policy may also affect whether GitHub asks for additional proof; an address alone may not establish enrollment.

How to apply for GitHub Education
- Sign in to your personal GitHub account.
- Open your GitHub Education benefits settings and select “Start an application” under GitHub Education.
- Complete the application and provide the requested proof of current student status. If an academic email is required, add and verify it on your account first.
- Submit the application. If approved, access your benefits through the GitHub Education portal.

Why an application may need more information
- The proof is hard to read: Submit a clear image or document rather than a blurry or incomplete copy.
- The document does not show current status: Choose evidence that includes a current date, term, or enrollment detail where possible.
- The academic email is not verified: If required, add the address to your GitHub account and verify it before applying.
- The school domain is unrecognized: Contact Education Support and provide the school’s name, website, and domain.
- The school’s email policy makes the address inconclusive: Supply official documentation explaining the school’s policy and evidence of enrollment.
- The academic email was used with another Pack account: GitHub says an academic email previously used for a different Pack account may not be reused. Its guidance recommends merging personal accounts rather than keeping duplicate accounts.

GitHub says student validation lasts two years. If you remain eligible, you can reapply. That does not guarantee that every partner offer will renew: partner terms can differ and may change. Check the current Student Developer Pack terms and the current benefits catalog for offer-specific conditions.
