JPG files can become damaged when a save, copy, or download is interrupted, or when storage or software alters or fails to deliver the image data. A file with the wrong extension can also look unreadable even when its contents are intact. Start by checking whether one photo or several are affected, confirming the actual format, and preserving an untouched original or backup before trying repairs.
What JPG corruption can look like
A damaged JPEG may refuse to open, display only part of the picture, or show gray, scrambled, or missing areas. Those symptoms do not identify a single cause: missing data, a faulty transfer, an extension mismatch, or an application/display problem can produce similar results.
JPEG is an image format; JPG is a common filename extension for it. The JPEG Committee describes the broader format system, including transport and metadata, in its JPEG Systems overview. A filename ending in .jpg is not, by itself, proof that the file contains JPEG data.

An interrupted save or camera-card write
If a camera loses power or a memory card is removed while a photo is being written, the resulting file may be incomplete. A crash or a full storage device during saving can also leave an unfinished output. These are plausible failure modes, not a ranked list of causes; no reliable frequency figures are established here. A copy or download that did not finish
Disconnecting a cable, cancelling a copy, or losing a connection during a download can leave an incomplete destination file. If the source photo is still available and opens correctly, make a fresh copy from that source rather than repeatedly working on the questionable copy.
Storage or shared hardware and software problems
Storage trouble can affect more than one image. Adobe advises investigating shared hardware or software when multiple files are corrupted or recovery fails. If several photos from the same card, drive, or network location have problems, treat that common path as a clue and prioritize preserving any other accessible files.

A filename extension that does not match the contents
A file named .jpg may actually contain another format. Adobe notes that an extension that does not match a file’s actual format can prevent Photoshop from identifying it correctly. Confirm the format before changing the suffix; renaming a file does not convert its contents. See Adobe’s guidance on the Invalid JPEG Marker error.
An application or display issue
If one program cannot open or display a photo, that alone does not prove the image data is damaged. Try opening a working copy in another trusted image viewer. If it works elsewhere, the issue may be limited to the original application or its display path. Adobe’s Photoshop recovery guidance also discusses application and graphics-related troubleshooting.

Use the symptoms to choose the next check

Safe first steps before attempting repair
- Leave the original untouched. Make a separate working copy before trying any repair or conversion.
- Look for a backup or earlier version. Open the backup to verify it, then save any recovered version under a new name. Adobe recommends verifying a backed-up copy before saving a recovered version.
- Check whether one file or several are affected. If multiple files share a drive, network location, device, time, or software change, investigate that common factor. Adobe’s recovery guidance says shared hardware or software may be responsible when multiple files are corrupted or recovery methods fail.
- Confirm the actual file format. Do not treat the filename suffix as conclusive or rename the extension until you know what the file contains.
- Retry from an intact source when possible. If the original photo or source transfer remains available, create a new copy from it.
- Protect files on a suspect card or drive. If failures recur, prioritize preserving other files and checking the storage device before relying on it again.
There is no universal repair success rate or single repair utility established for every kind of JPEG damage. A tool cannot be assumed to reconstruct image data that is missing; recovery prospects depend on what remains and whether a clean original or backup exists.

- Keep another copy of important photos and verify that it opens.
- Do not remove a camera card or disconnect storage during a save or transfer.
- Leave sufficient free space before saving new images.
- If failures affect several files, investigate the shared device, storage location, and software instead of repeatedly editing damaged copies.
- Prefer a safer local save location when a network share is unreliable. Adobe cautions that network shares can be more vulnerable during a save.
