To serve Markdown to agents without maintaining a Markdown copy at your origin, have the client request Accept: text/markdown and let an enabled gateway or CDN convert the origin’s HTML before returning it. Cloudflare’s Markdown for Agents is one documented implementation: it fetches HTML from the origin, converts it at the edge, and returns a Markdown representation. The origin remains the source of the content; conversion and representation selection happen at the gateway.
How gateway Markdown delivery works
The client makes an ordinary HTTP request and signals its preferred representation in the Accept header:
GET /article HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com
Accept: text/markdown
text/markdown is a registered media type. In Cloudflare’s documented flow, the enabled network fetches the page’s HTML from the origin, converts it, and serves Markdown to the client. The response identifies the representation with Content-Type: text/markdown; charset=utf-8. The standard media type and HTTP negotiation make the choice explicit; neither standard performs the conversion itself.
This arrangement can spare an origin application or CMS from generating and maintaining a second representation. It can also put conversion settings in one place for eligible traffic. Those are benefits of the architecture, not guarantees that every gateway supports it or that every page will convert.

- MOBILE APP SETUP - Download the free LinknLink App, sign in, and add multi-brand devices via smartphone. All device info auto-syncs to HomeClaw—no repeated config or manual importing. Drastically reduces setup time and effort for first-time installation and future expansion.
Keep HTML and Markdown distinct in caches
A response that changes based on Accept must be distinguishable from other representations in shared and downstream caches. Cloudflare documents adding Accept to the response’s Vary header and preserving other Vary dimensions declared by the origin. RFC 9110 defines Vary as describing request fields that might have influenced selection of the response content.
Without correct variation, a cache could serve a Markdown response to a client expecting HTML, or the reverse. Confirm that the deployed gateway and any intervening caches handle the header as intended.

- NO SUBSCRIPTION FEES & PRIVATE LORAWAN NETWORK: Build a local LoRaWAN IoT network with the built-in SIoT server and pre-installed Node-RED. Collect data, create dashboards, and run automation flows locally without required cloud service fees. Suitable for DIY makers, home gardeners, educators, and small IoT prototype projects.
- LOCAL DATA PROCESSING & PRIVACY CONTROL: Sensor data can be processed on the local network through the built‑in MQTT/SIoT server, reducing reliance on third‑party cloud platforms. Local automation rules continue running when internet access is unavailable — suitable for home, garden, greenhouse, and classroom IoT setups.
- 4KM COVERAGE & 8-CHANNEL RELIABILITY: Equipped with the SX1302 8-channel LoRaWAN chip, -140dBm sensitivity, 27dBm max transmit power, and included 5dBi antenna. Supports up to 4km coverage in open environments, helping connect garden sensors, greenhouse nodes, garages, mailboxes, and remote monitoring points.
- NODE-RED DRAG-AND-DROP VISUAL AUTOMATION:Automation rules, data dashboards, and control logic can be built with little to no coding using the pre‑installed Node‑RED. Flows such as reading soil moisture, checking temperature, and sending relay commands are created through a visual interface — reducing setup time for maker, education, and prototype projects.
- EASY SETUP WITH WIFI AP & MQTT INTEGRATION: Configure the gateway via Wi-Fi AP mode using a laptop or mobile device. Built-in MQTT broker supports integration with Node-RED dashboards, and other MQTT-compatible platforms. Designed for indoor residential, educational, and prototyping use; not intended for outdoor installation.
What Cloudflare changes in the response
For converted responses, Cloudflare documents setting the Markdown content type, recalculating Content-Length, adding Accept to Vary, and preserving other origin-declared variation dimensions. It preserves applicable origin security and cache headers, but removes headers that describe or validate the original body. The documented removals include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Content-Encoding,Content-Range, andTransfer-EncodingETagandLast-Modified
Because those validators relate to the original HTML body, Cloudflare says conditional requests cannot be honored for converted responses. Test cache behavior and conditional requests in your deployment; do not assume that an HTML validator also applies to its converted Markdown.

What the converted Markdown can contain
Cloudflare’s output may include YAML frontmatter populated from supported HTML metadata, Markdown converted from the document body, and JSON-LD retained as a fenced JSON block when present. Its preprocessing strips non-content elements such as headers, footers, navigation, scripts, and styles, while retaining JSON-LD. It also returns estimated x-markdown-tokens and x-original-tokens headers, which can help with context sizing and chunking. These are details of Cloudflare’s implementation, not a promise about other converters.
Content signals
If the origin supplies a content-signal value, Cloudflare preserves it and treats it as authoritative. If the origin supplies none, the feature adds Content-Signal: ai-train=yes, search=yes, ai-input=yes. That default belongs to this feature; it is not a general gateway default or a replacement for the origin owner’s policy decision.

Cloudflare availability, limits, and setup
Cloudflare’s documentation, last updated July 13, 2026, lists Markdown for Agents as available at no cost to Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans and SSL for SaaS customers. It converts HTML only, and the origin response cannot exceed 2 MB (2,097,152 bytes). Check the current documentation and your account before deployment, since plan terms and service limits can change.
The documented configuration paths are AI Crawl Control, configuration rules scoped to particular subdomains or paths, and an API setting. For content outside Cloudflare or when Markdown for Agents is unavailable, Cloudflare’s documentation points to Workers AI’s AI.toMarkdown() for multiple document types and Browser Rendering’s /markdown endpoint for dynamic pages that need browser rendering.

What token savings to expect
Cloudflare reports that one post introducing the feature contained 16,180 tokens in HTML and 3,150 after Markdown conversion, an 80% reduction. That is a vendor-reported result for that specific page, not a general conversion rate, independent benchmark, or promise of savings for another site. Page structure and content affect the result, so measure representative pages from your own origin if token count matters to your workflow.
Quick Recap
Checks before enabling gateway conversion
- Confirm the gateway negotiates on
Acceptand returns a Markdown response with the correct content type. - Verify caches distinguish Markdown from HTML and retain other required
Varydimensions. - Check supported origin content types, response-size limits, and whether dynamic pages need browser rendering.
- Review how the converter handles metadata, structured data, security and cache headers, validators, and content signals.
- Test representative pages and conditional requests, and scope conversion to the hosts or paths that should serve it.
