The safest choices are specific laptop configurations with support documented for the Linux distribution and release you plan to install—not entire brands or product families. Start with Canonical’s Ubuntu-certified laptop catalog if you want Ubuntu, or check the laptop maker’s Linux compatibility information for your chosen distribution. Current examples include certified Dell configurations and the Framework Laptop 16, which has a vendor installation guide for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

Which laptops are good choices for installing Linux?

These are evidence-backed starting points, not a universal performance ranking. The available documentation establishes Ubuntu certification for listed Dell configurations, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS installation guidance for Framework Laptop 16, and a Lenovo resource for checking distribution-specific compatibility. It does not establish comparable battery life, performance, price, or independent test results across them.

Candidate What the documentation supports What to verify
Ubuntu-certified Dell laptop configuration Canonical’s catalog lists specific Dell laptop configurations, including Dell 14 D14265 variants. The catalog showed 1,419 laptop results when accessed in 2026; the count can change. View Ubuntu-certified laptops. Confirm the exact configuration appears in the catalog for your intended Ubuntu release. Certification does not extend automatically to other Dell models or Linux distributions.
Framework Laptop 16 Framework publishes an installation guide for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on this model, released September 9, 2025. The guide says this is an officially supported Linux distribution for the named laptop. Read the Framework Laptop 16 installation guide. Follow the guide’s model-specific BIOS, audio, USB boot, Secure Boot, and firmware directions. Its instructions are for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on Framework Laptop 16.
Lenovo system covered by its Linux support resource Lenovo provides compatibility information for personal systems by Linux distribution and includes system/year entries. Check Lenovo Linux compatibility. Find the particular model and distribution in Lenovo’s resource; do not assume support for every ThinkPad or Lenovo laptop.

How to check whether a specific laptop will work

Linux compatibility is specific to the configuration, distribution, and release. A brand reputation or a certification for one Ubuntu setup is not proof that every configuration—or Fedora, Debian, or another distribution—will work the same way.

  1. Identify the exact laptop configuration. Check the model and configuration details, not just the product-family name. Hardware options can differ within one family.
  2. Check the intended distribution and release. For Ubuntu, search Canonical’s certification catalog and use its release filters. For a Lenovo personal system, consult Lenovo’s Linux compatibility resource.
  3. Look for documentation on the functions you need. Check for information about wireless, graphics, audio, suspend and resume, firmware updates, and BIOS settings. A general statement that a laptop supports Linux may not answer whether every feature you rely on is covered.
  4. Read the maker’s installation and troubleshooting instructions. Model-specific guidance can identify required settings and known trade-offs. Dell’s Ubuntu FAQ includes installation and dual-boot resources; Framework’s guide gives steps for its Laptop 16.
  5. Check practical purchase details separately. Local price, warranty, service, and current stock are not established by compatibility listings. Confirm them for the region and seller where you plan to buy.

Installing Ubuntu on Framework Laptop 16

Framework’s instructions are specific to Framework Laptop 16 and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS; other models or distributions may require different steps. The guide describes a fresh installation on a blank drive.

  3. Connect the installation USB and select it from the boot menu.
  4. Choose whether to enable Secure Boot in line with the guide and your intended setup. Framework describes it as optional and notes trade-offs.
  5. If connected to a network during installation, use the installer options for updates and third-party software as appropriate.
  6. After installation, check for and apply firmware updates following Framework’s instructions.

Secure Boot and dual boot: what to know

Secure Boot is not automatically a reason to reject a laptop. Ubuntu describes it as a process that validates boot binaries against firmware trust keys. The setting and its consequences depend on the system and the installation you intend to use; follow the distribution’s and laptop maker’s instructions for the exact model.

Framework’s Laptop 16 guide calls Secure Boot optional. It also warns readers who intend to boot Windows not to disable it. Dell’s Ubuntu FAQ covers installation and dual-boot topics, including custom partitioning in Ubuntu’s installer. Before changing firmware settings or partitions, use the relevant model-specific instructions and make sure important data is backed up.

Will every laptop feature work after installation?

Not necessarily. Dell says most peripherals work with Ubuntu, but some may require additional drivers or applications. That guidance is scoped to Dell systems and does not guarantee identical support across other manufacturers, distributions, or configurations. For any candidate, look for documentation covering the hardware functions that matter to you, and check current vendor support before buying.
