By October 9, 2026, 42 startups worldwide had reached decacorn status—a valuation of at least $10 billion—surpassing the previous full-year high of 34 in 2021. Axios reported the count with three months still left in 2026, so it is a year-to-date record, not a final annual total. Axios also reported PitchBook figures showing that companies took an average of 5.5 years to reach the threshold in 2025, down from 9.4 years in 2020.
What is a decacorn?
A decacorn is a startup or private company valued at $10 billion or more. The term describes a valuation threshold, not a measure of revenue, profit, or cash raised. Counts of companies crossing that threshold can vary with the data provider’s coverage and inclusion rules.
How many startups became decacorns in 2026?
Axios reported 42 new global decacorns through October 9, 2026, citing PitchBook-based market counts. That exceeded the 34 new global decacorns reported for all of 2021, the prior record, and the 14 recorded in 2020. Because the 2026 figure covers only the year to date, the final total could change. Read Axios’s October 9 report.
How long does it take to reach a $10 billion valuation?
PitchBook figures reported by Axios put the global average time to decacorn status at 5.5 years in 2025, compared with 9.4 years in 2020. These reported averages indicate a shorter timeline in 2025, but the underlying cohort definition and calculation method are not stated in the available reporting. They should not be read as a forecast for an individual startup or as proof that every company reaches the threshold faster.

Why do some 2026 counts look different?
Counts can describe different geographies, periods, or groups of companies. A tally of companies newly crossing $10 billion during a calendar year is not interchangeable with a count of companies currently above the threshold or a study restricted to a founding cohort.
- US-only snapshot: PitchBook News reported that 19 US startups had crossed $10 billion by July 24, 2026, and cited 22 as the prior US annual record, set in 2021. This earlier US-only count does not contradict Axios’s later global total of 42. See PitchBook News’s July 24 report.
- Founding-cohort analysis: Dealroom counted 38 VC-backed companies founded since 2020 that had reached valuations of at least $10 billion, in an analysis published September 1, 2026. That is a selected-cohort count, not the number of new decacorns in 2026. Dealroom noted that recent fast crossings were concentrated among AI and AI-infrastructure businesses; that observation does not establish that AI alone caused the broader increase. Read Dealroom’s analysis.
What the figures do—and do not—show
Together, the reported figures point to an unusually high pace of new global decacorns by early October 2026 and a lower reported average time to the threshold in 2025 than in 2020. They do not, by themselves, show that the companies share the same business model, that valuations were calculated identically, or that the year-end 2026 count is settled. Private-company valuation data depends on reported financing and market information, and the cited reports do not provide enough methodological detail to reconcile every count.
