To reset or remove Android’s Advertising ID, open Settings > Privacy > Ads. Google also documents Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads for newer ad-privacy controls. Choose Reset Advertising ID for a replacement, or Delete Advertising ID to remove it rather than receive a new one. This limits a particular advertising identifier; it does not make ads disappear or switch off every form of tracking.
Reset or delete: what is the difference?

Google describes the ID as an identifier used for advertising-related purposes, including ad personalization. Google Play Console Help cautions: “Your advertising ID will be deleted, but apps may have their own settings, which can also affect the types of ads you see.” (Google Play Console Help: Advertising ID)
How to find the Advertising ID controls
- Open your Android device’s Settings.
- Tap Privacy, then Ads.
- Choose Reset Advertising ID or Delete Advertising ID, depending on whether you want a replacement or removal.
Google documents this path as Settings > Privacy > Ads. Menu names and locations can vary by device and Android version. If you do not see the same options, search Settings for Ads or Advertising ID. Google’s developer help also lists the older route Privacy > Advanced > Ads, where the control may be labeled Opt out of Ads Personalization. That is an older label, not a universal current menu. Android’s controls for ad topics, app-suggested ads, and ad measurement are distinct from the Advertising ID. Google documents them under Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy. You can turn these features off there where available. (Google Android Help: Manage your ad privacy settings on Android)

Ad topics
Android can infer topics of interest from apps used on the device, and apps may request topics for ad personalization. Google says Android shares up to three topics at a time with an app and deletes ad topics after four weeks. Removing a topic prevents Android from sharing that topic again, but does not ensure that you will stop seeing ads related to it.
App-suggested ads
You can block an app from suggesting ads through these controls. Google says doing so deletes the associated suggestion data; related ads may still appear.

Ad measurement
This separate control concerns ad measurement. It is not the Advertising ID reset or delete option.

What to expect after changing the setting
You may still see ads after resetting or deleting the ID. An ad’s appearance can depend on more than that identifier: Google notes that personalization may depend on ad-privacy settings, Advertising ID settings, and the policies of the apps you use. Apps may also provide their own ad settings or use other identifiers. (Google Android Help: Manage your ad privacy settings on Android; Google Play Console Help: Advertising ID)

A 2024 study by Sebastian Zimmeck, Nishant Aggarwal, Zachary Liu, and Konrad Kollnig analyzed network traffic from 1,811 top-free apps in the US Google Play Store. The authors reported that neither the Android AdID setting nor Global Privacy Control had a substantial impact on the examined apps’ data selling and sharing practices. That finding is limited to the study’s sample and measurements; it does not establish how every Android app behaves.
