If your Windows app updated and now it won’t open, error 0x80073D02 means Windows couldn’t install or update the app package because resources the package modifies were in use. The code does not identify which process held those resources, and it does not prove that the app’s data is corrupt or that Windows needs reinstalling. Start by closing and reopening the app; if that does not help, work through the update, repair, reset, and reinstall steps below.
What does error 0x80073D02 mean?
Microsoft identifies 0x80073D02 as ERROR_PACKAGES_IN_USE. Its deployment error table says: “The package couldn’t be installed because resources it modifies are currently in use.” (Microsoft Learn: Troubleshooting packaging, deployment, and query of Windows apps.)
That message describes a package deployment problem, not its precise cause on your PC. The code alone does not tell you which app, process, or file was using the resource. It also is not the same as 0x80073CFE, which Microsoft defines as a corrupted package repository. Don’t assume repository corruption from 0x80073D02.

Try the lower-impact steps first. If an update or app still appears active, restart the PC before trying the launch or update again.

- Close and reopen the app. Close its window, then open it again. If it still will not launch, restart Windows and try once more.
- Check for Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Update Store apps. Open Microsoft Store > Library and select Get updates.
- Repair the app. Follow the Windows-version-specific steps below. If Repair is unavailable or does not fix the launch problem, consider Reset.
- Reinstall the app. If it came from Microsoft Store, open Microsoft Store > Library, find the app, and select Install.
These basic steps follow Microsoft’s Microsoft Store app troubleshooting guidance. For a game, Microsoft directs users to its separate game installation troubleshooting guidance.
How do I repair or reset the app?
Repair is the lower-impact option. Reset is a stronger app-level step that may restore the app to its default configuration. The effect on locally stored data can vary by app, so check the app publisher’s guidance before resetting an app that stores data on your device.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the menu beside the affected app, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available, and try opening the app.
- If Repair is missing or does not help, return to the same Advanced options page and select Reset.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the affected app, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available. If Repair is missing or ineffective, select Reset.
Not every app offers Repair or Reset. Microsoft provides the separate paths and availability caveat in its Repair apps and programs in Windows instructions.

If the app still fails to launch after reinstalling, contact the app publisher or your IT administrator for help. Microsoft’s technical troubleshooting guidance discusses checking whether a package is registered for a user, re-registering an app, using Reset-AppxPackage, getting a fresh package through Store or winget, and reviewing relevant event logs. Microsoft describes that material as intended for support agents and IT professionals. Does Windows 10 support affect this error?
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says the operating system no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes after that date. This is a lifecycle consideration, not evidence that support status caused 0x80073D02.
