A useful filter can reject a legitimate production case even when it passes expected tests. Keep the general rule intact, make any exception explicit and narrowly scoped, explain why it exists, and add a test so a future change does not erase it by accident.
Why a sound filter can still fail in production
A filter encodes a rule about which inputs should count. The rule may work for ordinary cases yet exclude a valid edge case the test data did not represent. Silently loosening the rule risks admitting bad data; adding an unnamed condition risks making the code look accidental to the next person who reads it.
In Siddharth Pandalai’s GPS-filter example, readings with accuracy worse than 50 metres are excluded from a trusted-distance calculation. During a stationary vehicle stop, however, a fix that is otherwise decent can occasionally report a wider accuracy radius. Applying the blanket cutoff in that situation can leave a gap in the recorded journey.

How the GPS example narrows its exception
Pandalai names the special condition exceptionalStationary. In the example, it is true only when all three conditions hold:
- Speed is no greater than 0.1 m/s.
- Accuracy is under 20 m.
- There is recent movement history.
The general accuracy gate remains in effect unless this named condition is satisfied. That structure communicates both the default and the reason a qualifying stationary reading may be treated differently. A broad bypass such as “accept inaccurate readings while stopped” would not express the same limits.

Make an exception maintainable
An exception is part of the behavior of the filter, not a mysterious workaround. Pandalai’s advice is to give it a name, comment on the reasoning, and test it. In practice, each part serves a distinct purpose:

- Name: Make the condition recognizable where it is applied, rather than burying it in a longer boolean expression.
- Reason: Explain the production situation the exception addresses and why the ordinary rule is too strict in that case.
- Test: Cover a qualifying edge case, a case that fails one of the exception conditions, and an ordinary case still governed by the base rule.
For the GPS example, tests should make clear that stationary status alone is not enough: the accuracy and recent-movement requirements also matter. They should also protect the normal accuracy cutoff when the exception does not apply. This makes the boundary—not merely the happy path—part of the documented behavior.

Relax only the rule the situation justifies
The article’s pause-and-resume example illustrates why exceptions should not spread to neighboring checks. After tracking resumes, a teleport-spike gate is relaxed for a grace window because the user may have moved while tracking was off. The accuracy gate remains enforced.
That separation matters: the grace window addresses uncertainty about distance after a pause, but it does not establish that an inaccurate reading is trustworthy. When adding an exception, identify the specific rule that blocks the valid case and leave unrelated safeguards alone.

A practical review checklist
- State the default rule plainly and preserve it for ordinary inputs.
- Describe the legitimate case the rule misses; do not assume that an unusual input is automatically valid.
- Limit the exception to explicit conditions that represent that case.
- Name the condition and document the rationale where maintainers will encounter it.
- Test both sides of the boundary, including the behavior of adjacent rules.
An unnamed condition can be mistaken for a bug and removed; a documented, tested exception gives future maintainers a reason to preserve or deliberately revise it. Pandalai’s article frames this as a production lesson, not a quantified claim about how often regressions occur.
